A Suns official recounted the initial conversation with the two-time MVP.
“Steve, we’re thinking about getting Shaquille O’Neal and …
“Do it.”
“But we’re going to have to give up …
“Do it.”
“OK, but these are our reservations …
“Do it.”
Nash wanted this change. He was weary of carrying the team on his 185-pound shoulders and the downcast, defeatist attitude that pervaded a locker room of a team that had the best record in the West. The last thing the Suns want to do is waste the energy of their star.
“Even though he was playing at a high level, I sensed he was frustrated,” general manager Steve Kerr said. “He needed something like this. We all did.”
But Nash didn’t jumping into the change blindly. He studied some film of O’Neal’s most recent games this season and bluntly told Shaq that he didn’t see the necessary fire and desire.
O’Neal told him “Don’t worry about what you see on film. I’ll show you what I have when I get there.”

Dear, I've been watching Shaq for 15 years. After his only MVP season, this guy have never been with any "fire and desire" in the first half of the regular season!

He always found any excuse to sit 20 games b4 all-star! Make it 40 if he is really injuried. But when playoff comes ...

To be most honest with u. The only real problem on Shaq that the Suns have to deal with is the 20-30 games absence in early season.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Shaq.

I do mean Shaq has attitude problem for first half of season, it is a fact we all have to admit. But I'm ok with it all the time. Shaq is getting old, his game is quite physical while mileage will have some effect. As long as he can pull himself together in second half of the season and well prepared for playoff, that's where it counts.

Whats up Acep! All I can add to this is the quote that Shaq said himself

"I'll be there when it counts." It kinda sums up how Shaq has been this past decade. We can call him lazy or whatever synonym we can come up with but he delivers the goods every time. If a finals appearance with all three teams he had suited up with and winning 4 rings on two of them isn't a good enough resume..then I think Jason Kidd should retire already because no one is going to hire em

The Spurs only got one under 30. Their core of 3 might be a littler younger, but the entire supporting cast is way too old ... Some of their key role players, such as Horry and Finley, had seriously declined this season. It is a main reason they have been struggling a bit. They r hoping these guys can still put up some meaningful contribution in playoff, but I doubt it.

Seriously, I would not consider the Spurs the main target for this playoff, especially after the arrival of Shaq. We should focus on the Lakers first, then maybe the Mavs.

I hope not! The suns have a chance to win 2 titles if they can rehabilitate the diesel and use him wisely. I was very encouraged that his problems were assessed as related to flexibility. If shaq goes on a flexibility training program, he will get more quickness, which I expect he needs. No, he wont be quick, but any improvement will help.

You're right. All the Suns need is a more mobile and healthy diesel.

I'm tired of the Suns always being the smallest kid on the block. Seeing Shaq introduced in Phoenix gave me pause. I know he is big, but it still makes one think twice all over again upon seeing the news conference. He is a Goliath. It still amazes me.
