He did hold out but only for some of the mini camps...which isn't a big deal. He was getting blasted by some people but not on the level of Fitz. It was the same offseason that Javon Walker refused to show up to Packers mini camps and Favre ripped him. I don't think he'll hold out, we have a few years to get a deal done.

Can't people just be happy that Fitz is in camp? That his cap number this year and next has pretty much been cut in half or that in no year during the remainder of his contract will he have a number approaching what his number this year would have been under his original deal (a deal he didn't have to re-negotiate)?

I thought the signing would have made people happy and cut down on the garbage posts but nope.

Some people just refuse to be happy. Glad I'm not one of them.

I am think of D-Dock who said last year in an interview that he is looking for the team to shred his contract because he deserves it.

That is not what Dockett Stated. He stated that he wants to play so well that it will force the team to give him a new contract. He never stated anything about supposed demands like you suggest.

I remember that as well. He was playing that good until Berry went down. B-train wasn't very effective stat-wise but the D-line sure did take a hit when he went down for the season.

If he wanted to sign here for less he could have still done that, and quite easily at that. There is no penalty for being over the cap right now. You just got to be under it at some point in the summer (I do not know the date as of right now)

You can never be over the cap at any point in time.

Great line. Somers believes Q is part of the heart and soul of this team and says that management agrees. Let's hope they reach a deal and Q stays.

It'll be fine as long as Boldin gets paid roughly the same yearly salary as Fitz.

Yes, it's a lot of money to have invested into a skill set, but the team is better off with two players of their caliber than one.

Especially when the talent below them are thinner by comparison.

Here's an interesting few items to help answer cap questions:

per http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/faq.asp

1) When must teams come in compliance with the Salary Cap?

Answer: March 2.

2) So...what happens if a team goes over the Salary Cap?

Answer:
The short answer is simply that NO team CAN go over the Salary Cap. Note that every contract must go through the NFL League Office before the deal can be made official. Presumably, one of the things the league must do at this time is determine whether or not the contract would violate the NFL's Salary Cap.

If the deal does violate the cap, then the NFL will reject it.

If a team releases or trades a player and the signing bonus acceleration puts a team over the Salary Cap, the team will have seven days to conform with the Salary Cap. However, they may not sign any players until there is room to do so under the Salary Cap.

There have been instances in which a team has managed to sneak a cap evading contract by the league. Upon further review, the violations were caught by the league and the respective teams were penalized. Penalties include fines and/or forfeiture of draft picks. In recent history both the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers have been penalized draft picks, while the 49ers' front office personnel (Carmen Policy and Dwight Clark) were also fined.

That can't be......OOOOooooh.

Cardinals' focus now shifts to Boldin

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images It may be difficult for the Cardinals to keep both Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald on the roster.

Arizona pulled off a mega trade Tuesday. The Cardinals traded one set of wide-receiver issues for another.
After awarding wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald with a four-year, $40 million extension that includes $30 million in guaranteed money, the Cardinals’ salary spotlight shifted instantly to wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who is scheduled to be paid considerably less than his receiving counterpart.
Last season, the Cardinals offered Boldin a contract extension, and here’s the key fact to consider: Boldin told them he wanted to wait for Fitzgerald to finalize his new deal. Now that he has, it dwarfs Boldin’s, whose average annual salary is three to four times less than Fitzgerald’s.
Boldin is scheduled to make $2.5 million in base salary this season, $2.75 million in base salary in 2009 and $3 million in base salary in 2010.
Yet, Fitzgerald did not sign a four-year, $22.75 million contract extension the way Boldin did back in July 2005, when he received $13.25 million in bonuses and salary in 2005-’06. Still ...
Whereas there were contract issues in recent weeks regarding Fitzgerald, who became the subject of trade inquiries from other wide-receiver-needy teams, there now are expected to be contract issues regarding Boldin, who is bound to become the subject of trade inquiries from other wide-receiver-needy teams.
Teammates to finish with 100-plus receptions Year Players Team Rec. 2005 Arizona Larry Fitzgerald
Anquan Boldin 103
102 2000 Denver Rod Smith
Ed McCaffrey 100
101 1995 Detroit Herman Moore
Brett Perriman 123
108 Philadelphia, Washington and Dallas have explored the possibility of acquiring a big-name wide receiver, only to find that there aren’t any readily available. Now those teams could wind up exploring Boldin’s availability.
Boldin’s decision will be whether or not to approach the Cardinals for an extension. His agent is the deal-making Drew Rosenhaus. It will be up to Rosenhaus to plot the best course of action for the 27-year-old Boldin. But his numbers compare favorably to Fitzgerald’s, and many within the Cardinals organization consider Boldin to be the better receiver.
Boldin has been voted to two Pro Bowls; Fitzgerald has been voted to two Pro Bowls.
Boldin has 413 catches for 5,458 yards and 29 touchdowns; Fitzgerald has 330 catches for 4,544 yards and 34 touchdowns.
Both are an integral part of the Cardinals' young and improving offense. But it could be difficult to pay both.
The fine print

Not only does the 24-year-old Fitzgerald cash in now, but he is bound to cash in later, once his current deal expires.
Fitzgerald’s new deal contains a clause stating that, if the Cardinals franchise him at the end of the new contract in 2012, it will have to be done to the tune of $23 million for that season.
But the Cardinals also benefitted from Fitzgerald’s new deal. It will save Arizona $8 million against the salary cap this off-season, money it now can use to sign second tier free agents.

So what might a new deal for Boldin look like? Extend him 3 more years (6 years total), SB of, say, $21 million and a roster bonus of $5 million in '09. Drop his base this year to $1.5 million, $2 m next year, and so on.......maybe some ProBowl incentives or others??????

i see this turning bad for the cards. i wouldnt hold any resentment against Q if he demands a trade if no new contract is reached. you only get a few opportunities in this league to make your money and his time is now to make that big money. nfl teams cant spend 20mil a year on two WR and be successful. the cardinals made their choice.

What the Cards need to do is be creative with the structure of Q's contract. He is going to be 30 or older after this extension or any contract he gets with another team regardless, so I don't believe the number of years will be an issue like it was with Fitz. They can back load his contract so that right as Fitz's deal is up, Boldin starts to have a higher cap hit, and then if they decide to keep Fitz as well, they can do the same. If the Cards could get Boldin to agree to a deal that keeps him until he is 32-34 they can easily afford both of them.

This is the kind of B.S. that the media stirs up. In five days this assumption will be looked at like it is a fact, and that Boldin is good as gone.

Just like I said with Fitz. Boldin is not going anywhere. Regardless of what the clueless media wants to think.

I don't think that Boldin probably wants to be paid equal to Fitz. He didn't after Fitz signed his monster rookie deal, and then Boldin went to the Pro Bowl the next season.

I think that Boldin would be happy with a deal that gives him some more guaranteed money and $6 million per season. Since he still has three years on his contract, I think that adding 3 years, giving him some $10 million in SB money, and adding $3 million to his salary would probably get the deal done.

It is projected. And the MArch 2nd date is when the new cap amounts take effect and when a players next years contracts amounts kick in. So even though a team is said to be over the cap, they technically are not over it until the next years contracts and new cap amount goes into effect.

Not that Q doesn't deserve to be paid now, isn't the Dansby thing a bit more important than bruising the mighty Q's ego? Q can get in line...he will get his but losing arguably the best LB on the team would be silly when Q has 3 years left on his deal.

They arent talking to Q about a restructure so the point is moot.

I never insinuated one or the other but rather asked what is most important to this team right now. I presume at some point the Cards will try and do a deal for Q but to me Dansby is the critical component right now and not worrying about Q's ego, brusied or otherwise.

Joe, we know that most teams take around 80 guys to training camp. So how does that work if you can't be over the cap at any time after March 2nd. Is it because only 51 of the 80 count toward the cap?

The rule of 51. You are correct sir.

Also teams used to be able to carry more then 80 because of the NFLE exceptions. I wonder if the NFL will allow teams to carry more then 80 this year somehow?
