Red Sox team president Dave Dombrowski confirmed Sunday that he was informed the Red Sox were out of the running for Shohei Ohtani.

The Red Sox had hoped to make a strong presentation to Ohtani and his representatives this week, but they won't be afforded the opportunity. The Mets, Yankees, Twins, Pirates, Blue Jays, Athletics and Brewers have also been told they won't advance to the next round, while the Giants and Mariners have made the list of finalists. The Angels, Dodgers and perhaps the Padres are expected to join them.

Sources: Shohei Ohtani is done interviewing the seven finalists to sign him. His last meeting was actually Tuesday night with the San Diego Padres. Next, presumably, will be his decision. Timetable is not clear yet, but it could well be soon.

One baseball person whose opinion I respect told me earlier this week that he'll be "shocked'' if Shohei Ohtani doesn't wind up in Seattle. He wasn't basing it on any inside knowledge. But Jerry Dipoto is certainly acting like a guy who won't take "no'' for an answer

It had to be an AL team so he could DH instead of having to play in outfield on his days off from pitching.

Four or so at-bats on each of his four days off and some base running should keep him from running down on his pitching day.

And Anaheim is far enough away from L.A. to keep him out of the glitter and pressure of a major city, even if they call themselves the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Now that he has a contract, it is reported that he has a sprained ULC in his right elbow. That type of injury could lead to Tommy John surgery.

I guess if he becomes limited to being an everyday player (like Babe Ruth), the Angels won't be disappointed.
