Should Pendy stay or should he go?

Should Pendy be replaced with a new DC?

I say go. Good lord should he go. I would love to see what this defensive talent could do with a real coach back there. His soft play at the end of games and the "bend, bend, bend but don't break..aw, why'd ya break" style he defaults to so often is horrid.

Just wanted a heatcheck on where the board stood on Pendy now.

yes, there will be multiple options for my favorite answer.

We should just play way off him and hope he takes the underneath and keeps going.

He did some nice work in the playoffs for sure but I am so sick of that 10 yards off the Wr stuff. I realize Holmes is a great player and DRC is a rookie but he basically stuck DRC in a no win situation by having him that far off. He's not a good tackler yet and he's playing off a guy who's great after the catch, just made no sense to me.

I do think he did a nice job most of the playoffs, but that last drive once again we just can't give up the big plays like that, too many guys are out of position all year, some of that has to be on the DC.

He should go, but I'm pretty certain he won't, especially if Todd Haley leaves to coach the Chiefs. Whiz is not going to want to go through replacing both coordinators.

Plus, the defense stepped up in the post season and showed signs of promise, enough that I think there is enough of a backing within the organization to retain him.

Other than the Buffalo game, has the defense really held a lead down to close out the game? Dallas, Washington, it seems like no lead was ever safe.

They'd make some great play to get the team back in the game and then go soft. Very nerve racking, predictable and frustrating.

Whis is the one who has to decide I guess.

Personally I'd be inclined to fire him myself, the poster who said it's too frequent I think is on to something.

His rope a dope end of game defenses scare me but let's put this into context, do you fire Lebeau if the Steelers don't drive the field and win the game and we win for letting Fitz run wild on you?

Take this for what its worth:

4. Immediately after talking about Haley, I asked if Clancy Pendergast would be back. He sounded shocked by my question. His exact words, "Why wouldn't he be?". I reminded him that his contract is up and that he sucked as a playcaller. His response was and I quote, "Ken and Clancy have a great working relationship". He stopped short of guaranteeing me that Clancy would return but he didn't give his possible absence much insight. Kinda of a "Less you say, the more you say" kind of thing.

If his contract is up, would it be considered telling if no other team interviewed him? I want him gone but I think he survives because of the playoff run. 3 truly bad years of defense and counting.

We have too much talent to be so mediocre as a defense. I like the flashes we see, but there is no consistency.

Just when I started to like him again, he pulls out his worst scheme in the biggest game of the entire franchise's history.

Get someone like Crennel in here and kick Pendy to the curb.

Ditto. How can you suddenly grow a set in the playoffs, play aggressive in the secondary, find that it works better than what you've been doing all season, and then put your best secondary player in the worst situation to fail? And then not fix it? Stupidity personified. I'm back on the fire Pendy side again.

Y'know, as much as I don't like Schottenheimer as a head coach, he's a defensive guy and has ties to coach Whis. MS has been trying to get another job too. In 21 years as a head coach his defenses have ranked 11th or better 14 times(twice #1). I would want Whis calling the shots but I could see Schottenheimer being an upgrade.

The only reason I said no was due the fact that replacing the DC and OC is not good IMHO. If we knew Haley was coming back for sure, then I would have voted yes.

1. He's not going anywhere.
2. If Whisenhunt likes him that's good enough for me.
3. Allowing 20 points should be enough to win as it relates to our defensive/offensive talent
4. Our DB's playing 10 yards off the ball (which happened exact just once or twice in the final drive) had nothing to do with Pittsburgh advancing the ball in the last two minutes

No because the defense did well during the playoffs. The Super Bowl game could have gone either way. I can't blame the defense for the loss.

But I'm not a big Pendy fan and would not complain if a change was made.

Exactly. I know the question was "do you want Pendy back" but this talk is all fluff. Super Bowl DC don't get fired. It's just not going to happen and apparently Wiz works well with the guy so its a moot point.

Everybody should read that football future link/thread in SHZM's post. Very interesting stuff. The last point out of Mike B scares the hell out of me though.

I agree on 4 but I'm talking earlier in the game. Most of Pitt's drives consisted of that play over and over, even the ones they didn't score on they ate clock doing it.

If he goes, there could be trouble. If he stays, it could be double.

And there it is. :yeahthat:
The pass rush was either not there or Ben did his Ben thing.

The biggest issue I have with the Defense is not getting enough 3 & outs.
Add a true pass rusher, upgrade the Nickle and dime DB's and the defense run by Clancy will very very good.

The big question is who else is out there, available, and better?

Somebody mentioned Marty, but Marty's not wanting to come back to coaching yet. He's received several good offers and showed no interest.

There wasn't all this b******* after the Cardinals swept through the playoffs.

Look, this is the same D that stoped three of the top 5 rushers in the NFL this postseason. And stoped them COLD. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

As far as them playing in safe mode at the end of games, I don't agree with that either and that can be remedied by the head coach too. But he can't cover recievers either. He's not the one telling DRC to leave his man to cover a back coming out of the backfield ect.

Overall this D played solid throughout the playoffs, and besides the 1st and last drives shut the Pitt. offense down the entire game pretty much.

Yes and No. Pendy IMHO is not the issue. We need more pass rushing talent and better cover DB's in the nickle and dime packages.

The D needs to get more 3 & outs. The Steeler O had several long time consuming drives. This puts a lot of pressure on our O to make every drive count.

Defense wins championships, we have all heard that before. The Steelers have the best Defense this year and won the SB. Our D was very good in the playoffs with stopping the run and take aways. Our pass D was not very good in several of the games and that is why we came up seconds and inches short of the title.

I truly believe the Offense can take a step backwards in 09 as long as the Defense takes 2 steps forward.
Get two pass rushers. A DE and OLB that bring consistent pressure.
Another cover CB.
Ware and or Fransisco need to be upgraded.
Get Dansby re-signed. He is the glue that holds this D together.
A. Smith is a spark plug and if possible kept as well.
A Dub is an amazing blitzer and a bit of a liability in coverage. Just another reason to upgrade the back up safety positions so that A Dub can be A Dub.

How do we afford this? runsandducksforcover :stick:- Trade Q for the cap relief and extra picks.
