I've asked this question a few times and haven't gotten a satisfactory answer.

Isn't Boozer an unrestricted free agent, now that the Cavaliers declined his option? If so, Cleveland has no matching rights at all. They could try to outbid the Jazz, or put up a comparable offer and hope Boozer goes for it, but they can't force him to stay -- even if they do clear the cap space.

You know, I looked for a long time on this and couldn't come up with an answer.

Every paper is claiming that he is a restricted FA right now.

My take: A player coming off a rookie scale contract is an RFA. By not picking up the option, they were not releasing him from his deal, but allowing it to expire.

According to ESPNews, the Cavs and Knicks are working out a trade that would send Z to NY in exchange for Kurt Thomas and a player to be named later

What would we have to offer the Cavs to beat that deal? Would we want to?

We would get Z back. I am not sure what we would have to give up.

Couple of followup thoughts:

1. Apparently the Cavs have the right to match Boozer's deal, but only up to their cap space. Right now HoopsHype shows them at $39.8 million. It depends on where the cap is set, but they will have roughly $5 million in space. This means they need to get an extra $5 to $6 million in space, not the full $10 million needed to match.

2. I'm not sure Z is a good fit with the Suns. His strength is on the offensvie rather than defensive end and needs to get the ball to be effective.

3. There is no way that Suns could get Z directly anyway. My gimmick was to permit the Mavs to use the trade exemption from the Nash deal (at a steep price BTW), but without that there is no way the Suns are in play. The Suns do not have cap space left to offer anything of value to the Cavs.

Wait a minute....

I thought the Cavs were going to use the MLE to sign Boozer and the MLE is only for teams at or over the cap.

They have 5+ Mil in cap space? What am I missing here?

Just sloppy reporting. The Cavs are under the cap and do not actually have their MLE. The problem is that their cap space could actually be less than the MLE, but it could be expanded by dealing Z. This would not work if they only had their MLE.

The wording of the rule on this, as quoted verbatim on this board, states that a team HAS the mid-level exception IF it will be over the cap when it uses the exception. The Cavs fit that scenario.

One way the Mavs could get cap space would be to do a sign and trade with the Suns on Nash. My idea would be to restructure the Nash deal to front end the deal to $14 million and then send Eisley to Dallas. This would give Dallas an extra $7.6 million in trade exemption to use in the Ilgauskas deal.

No it wouldn’t. Look up Base Year Compensation in the CBA or the Salary Cap FAQ.
