Diamondbacks activate OF Bautista, C Barajas

SportsTicker

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - The Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday activated outfielder Danny Bautista and catcher Rod Barajas from the 15-day disabled list.

Bautista has been sidelined since June 19 with a strained left hamstring while Barajas has been out since the first week in June with tendinitis in his left wrist.

The Diamondbacks (54-46), who are two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League wild card race, will make a pair of corresponding moves prior to Wednesday's game at San Francisco

A reserve, Bautista was batting .260 with one homer and 18 RBI in 16 games before going on the DL.

Barajas is hitting .231 with two homers and 20 RBI in 44 games.

Well, it shouldn't be a pitcher going down. So I will go with Hammock and Grace will be released.

Overbay and Hammock is my guess, but it hasn't been announced yet. I didn't know they were activating Barajas today also.

Hammock and Kata. Cintron is too valuable becaue he can play 3 infield positions. Also, if this team sends Overbay down but keep Grace on the roster I will be pissed.

where did you hear that? They would have been my choices too, but I didn't know Rod was all ready.

I think Overbay is expendable now that Shea is here. I like Shea playing first better than third and with that move it gives Tracy a chance.

Shea's going to have to learn to catch a friggin' ball if he plans to keep this fan's support.

Hey Shea!!!!

How about knowing how many outs there are before running on a fly ball. That should be an automatic fine for stupidity.

Seeing BB's face at some points tonight, and then seeing JC's expression, I'd think some serious new-orifice-ripping is on the post-game agenda by one or both, which I applaud whole-heartedly. Heck, let us at 'em!! (And I'd certainly include Brenly on my list of rippees. Does he EVER take firm control of what's happening on the field or at the plate? Obviously his players can't do it themselves, right now.)

Not only awful offensively, but the leather has turned to iron, the brains to jello, and the running game like a lost episode of The Keystone Cops. Totally embarrassing! Had this been a home game, JC might be tempted to offer refunds to the paying fans!

The Diamondbacks activated OF Danny Bautista and C Rod Barajas from the 15-day disabled list July 23 and sent 1B Lyle Overbay and utility man Robby Hammock back to Triple-A Tucson. The flurry of transactions exhausted manager Bob Brenly, who had the unpleasant task of demoting two of his most promising rookies -- but it also allowed the Diamondbacks to get closer to full strength than they've been at any point in their injury-plagued season.

Now that Shea is at 1B, I hope Brenly keeps him there, and lets him settle into it. If he swings him between 1B and 3B, he's asking for trouble defensively.

And if Hillenbrand has troubles in the field, sooner or later, it's going to affect his hitting. No one's going to think that BB is not doing his job if he goes with a set lineup.

As far as Shea not knowing how many outs there are when he's on the bases, that's carelessness! And we've seen too much of it lately on the D'backs.

When a team does that, I think the Manager and Coaching staff share in the responsibility.

I'm disappointed that our D'backs are weaker in fundamentals than their opponents. Look at the role it played in the Giants series.

And with all due respect to Curt, my heart almost stopped when I saw him flying through the air, not knowing how to perform a rundown on the 3rd base line, when he came off the DL.

Fundamentals should not be up to the coaching staff in the Major Leagues. These players should know how to play baseball, and all the fundamentals should be learned in the minors. The thing is it's the "cagey veterans" who have commited many of the blunders.

Can you say, green machine, that Bob Brenly's helter-skelter lineups don't contribute to lack of "2nd nature" on the field. 30 different lineups in 25 games, even before we had many players on the DL.

A player comes to the park, not knowing if he's playing, where he's playing, or where he's batting?

I have felt for a long time that Brenly's obsession with over-managing would catch up with us.

Put the players out there, let each one know his role, and let them build a comfort level -- whether at-bat, on the bases, or in the field.

The chemistry in baseball is nowhere near that of basketball, hockey, or soccer. But it is a subtle factor on the diamond . . . and, I believe, the lack of it has hurt us more than it's helped.

Did having 14 position players with a bunch of starts, as opposed to 8 starters and 6 accustomed to coming off the bench, make a difference when so many went on the DL?

No, the BabyBacks were brought up without alot of experience, put into the lineup, and we went on a winning streak.

It's not only the excitement of the BabyBacks that passed the Dodgers and brought us to within striking range of the Giants. It was the chemistry that came from the necessity of sticking with basically the same lineup.

Now that Bob Brenly has people coming off the DL, he can go back to over-managing . . . and we slide out of contention!

I believe that's why we are where we are!
