I think you’re just witnessing a change in how the next generation of coaches interacts with a new generation of players. I think the way they greet one and other is changing, but that needn’t reflect how a coach challenges, or holds accountable, players.
Coaching is about knowing your players on a personal, deep level. Knowing what drives them and then dialing those knows. Every player is different, with different emotional, fiscal, physical needs. Finding the chemistry among 52 guys is a huge task and you don't do it with multimillionaire by being an *****.

I coach super low level basketball, both boys and girls varsity, and have taken a few teams to state and working on my third. Its all about relationships. And they last.

It's the same with employees...know what your team needs, thrives on, as a team and as individuals. Leadership isn't the stick or the carrot..it's knowing when to use either on whom and why.

I'm not a huge BA fan, not like some, but I think what we needed was similar to when he came in and said, "I'm going to cuss them out and hug them later."
Cutting it off there because that is my point to address. BA didn't do that on his first day meeting the team. He said that, but when meeting players he was absolutely his very affable self with them. No reason to cuss them out day one. You build rapport so you CAN cuss them out.

I coach. I was coached by yelly ass coaches our teams had low respect for, and we were good...but coaches felt the nail in their nads and thought they had to "drive" us. I, because of that, don't yell. Except when I do. And when I do you better bet the entire gym goes dead ass silent. Because when your demeanor is hardass, you don't really have a second gear..or third..or fourth. Which is why we tuned out our coaches. If I even begin to yell I have 12 pairs of eyes in mine instantly, and players amped up ready to go.

Being "that coach" isn't bad...but it is just a trick in a bag of goodies you pull out at any given moment. Keep that powder fresh lol.

This. 100% this. I’ve coached high school and a LOT of kids. I also run a very large and varied business. What D-Dogg (welcome back bud, you’ve been missed) described was my history with most coaches (save one…) and they never maximized our teams talents - and these were talented teams. Players just had no desire to run through a brick wall for those guys. The lone coach that lead as D-Dogg described his style did have us ready to run through walls. And he wasn’t soft spoken, he was a fiery leader. But didn’t use anger/harsh feedback unless it was warranted and then everyone was on alert.

I’ve patterned my style after that guy. I’m passionate. But I care about my teams. And I’m not afraid for them to know I care. And I want to know them and I want them to know me. Do lines get blurred? Surprisingly no. Because I don’t let them. I set boundaries. And I’m not meaning to brag but over the years I’ve had a lot of employees tell me I’m the best boss they’ve had, or that they don’t want to report to anyone else. And the teams that I coach want to practice longer, they want to get better, they listen better than I’ve seen when the same kids work with other coaches.

Am I perfect leader/coach? Naw. Not by a long shot. And I’m still learning all the time. But I recognize the value of connection, empathy, loyalty, autonomy, communication whilst still establishing boundaries, accountability, and discipline.

Yeah, I coach my varsity down to my middle school and I install my system from 5th grade on up. Our MS season is spring, HS winter, so rn I have 3 of my high performing freshman volunteering to help coach the MS. We have a strong culture.

I'm a hype man for these kids...very in tune with them. I attend their plays, concerts, other sports. They know I care. And they play HARD. And on the sideline I'm very loud but 99% positive. So when I do have to drop a hammer, it's felt.

A few years ago I had a team that was 26-5, and we were in a game with a bad region opponent and our star guard was playing like trash. We were down 13 at half and I walked into the locker room, said I don't remember what but it was hot and angry, and I ended in about 2 minutes with "whatever team walks out of this room better not be the team that walked in" and left them in silence. We won by 15. There's no way that happens if I was like that all the time. They needed their attitudes checked. It was the ultimate moment I knew I was doing things the right way.

I thought I should indicate my primary concern since I one of the few not excited by the hire. When you pick an HC it’s usually someone who brings a special skill that often becomes the core of the team’s identity. Gannon’s claim to fame was primarily the defensive scheme of the Eagles. I’m not sure prior to the last two seasons, anyone saw him on the verge of being an HC. This is not to say he didn’t pay his dues. He clearly earned his way to the DC job.

if you aren’t familiar with his defensive theory; it’s fairly simple. He plays mostly man in pass coverage. The defense, as a whole, is designed to avoid big plays by the offense. He figures if you make them go down the field incrementally, the offense is more likely to make a mistake. He’s not a big fan of blitzing, but then he coached a DL capable of getting to the QB on their own. Turnovers are a large part of his game.

My concerns are first that the Cards’ current offensive capabilities often leave the defense on the field too long. If the Cards’ opponent’s drives tend to be long, that compounds the problem. This could leave the defense exhausted, especially late in games. This means the offense needs to be rebuilt more rapidly than may have been anticipated. Is that possible, especially with Murray out?

The second concern is the way Reid handled Gannon’s defense. Did his game plan reveal basic flaws in the defensive strategy that must be corrected so many teams can’t take advantage? Perhaps some small adjustments will correct the issue. I’m just not certain. Clearly those adjustments weren’t made in the Super Bowl. Offenses and defenses typically leapfrog each other to gain advantage. I sincerely hope the next great leap is made by Gannon, but personnel improvement must happen first. That’s mostly up to the new GM and his staff.

My hire preference was to go offense or someone with more experience. All of this doesn’t mean Gannon can‘t succeed. I would think based on his history that Carter would be his draft preference followed by a CB in round 2 unless a good one is acquired in FA. I would think he‘d prefer the rest of the draft focuses on the trenches. The question of 3-4 or 4-3 depends on the ultimate personnel accumulated. He could go either way. I think he would prefer to keep Hopkins, as he might be the best drive extending WR in the game, thus resting the defense.

Of course my hope is Gannon succeeds. I expect significant Cardinal defensive improvement. The offense’s success will depend on new personnel and better coaching. We should finally see if a better supporting cast can make Murray more successful. Better game day play selection would help as well.

I’m confident in the GM. I can only hope Gannon builds a quality staff and rises to the occasion.
I mean if Reid's beats you and you handle you're business with other teams it's it's all good. I can live with that

I don't think that's an issue with him. He said himself in the press conference about coaching them hard and also holding them to accountability, but there has to be love with that too.

He's just meeting these guys for the first time, he want them to leave with a good impression.
100% this. Show them your love first because you know they're gonna see your hard side on the field in a few months.

If you want to win over Murray get him an O-line as good as Philly
Again how can one evaluate our lines say the last 15 years? We were 1 dimensional passing at minimum 2-1- that’s why cards players do great elsewhere. I know I’m like a broken record but the play calling has stubbornly been the same since Denny Greene. I know they count kylers runs, and yes they count and are dominate, but they don’t change the freaking defense. nor does tricking them with wr runs 10 times a game, whie your back up running back makes the pro bowl!

im not excited about Gannon but relieved it’s not Payton. will see what he means about building everything around Kyler. Kyler is a 3rd dimension qb specialist, stick in a 1 dimension offense. I mean you want to see his full skill set, establish a running back threat, where pa and rpo can thrive!

thsts what Gannon is saying, but so did all the others, like every freaking Week! should have ran more , should have ran more, up, down, early , kate , empty backfield shotgun against a pass defense.

I'm wondering why we haven't seen the video of the post game victory speech in the locker room. I was looking forward to it. The last one on the team website is from week 10 last season.

Yeah I think Gannon has said no to that. What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room.

Maybe, at best, we might get a little on Flight plan.

I'm glad, I always found Kliff's a bit cringe.
