Honestly I think it was the right call. Ewers is usually horrendous against the blitz, the linebacker just got caught flat footed.
All you had to do was prevent 14 yards. An all out blitz imbalances your defense if they successfully pick it up. It’s an unnecessary gamble. Against a vastly superior offensive line. The down and distance played in your favor and you gave the advantage up.

In truth, the Sun Devils were hurt most by extended rest, easily the most serious complication in the expanded College Football Playoff. In the first three quarterfinals of the CFP, the team that hadn’t played in three-plus weeks was outscored 42-3 in the first quarter by opponents who had played in the opening round on the playoffs. Once the Sun Devils found their footing, it was a different ballgame.
Missing Simmons for the first half was an impact too. He immediately impacted the game in the second half.

The short answer is Arch isn't actually good yet and Arch was supposedly advised by his uncles to sit behind Ewers for 2 years, learn from Sark, and start 3 years; so he isn't pressuring Sark to start him or threatening to transfer.

We saw Arch for 3 games against easy opponents early in the year. Arch already has a better deep ball and is more mobile, but he still seems to have some timing issues, he certainly didn't look like a clear upgrade.

Ewers has a lot more time in this offense and I bet he looks a lot better in practice. Ewers knows how to do everything and "can" execute at a high level, but he's just not close to consistent. As we saw on 4th and 13, he can make the big play in big moment. His main issue is the deep ball and usually he cracks like an egg under pressure. Ewers is a 3 year starter while Arch is a redshirt freshman. It's just hard to bench him for a guy who probably hasn't mastered the offense yet on the biggest stage.

As a fan I do wish he would bench Quinn because the offense is maddening to watch, but I'm not sure it would actually be smart. That's a lot of pressure on a freshman to just be inserted into the playoffs.
My two texas buddies confirm all of this. They’re excited for arch, but not clamoring for him to start over ewers.

Ouchie, he played at the professional level, yet?

Why would I say “yeah, I might be wrong” if he hasn’t?
Because I thought you were capable of learning. New evidence and all . . .

I guess some people don’t change their perspective until absolutely proven wrong. Never understood that stance.

Texas was the better team. Leavitt looked like a red shirt freshman; played like ish for the most part.

ASU was punching above its weight class. The team nearly pulled it off and played amazing, but if it weren’t for cam skat, they never had a chance in that game or a 9-2 record.

I'd also say having Simmons out the 1st half hurt. He made a big impact in the second half. Also, no Tyson hurt too. Looks like Tyson should get some WR help next year.

Huh?? Missing the sole top-tier, NFL-ready WR and still, he helped lead the team to an inch of winning. He played anything but like a red-shirt Freshman. He was running for his life the second he took the snap on virtually every play. In the 4th quarter, his ankle got rolled up on and still toughed it out and was able to be effective with both his arm and his legs.

We must have watched different games. I did see that he was pressured may times and absolutely love his wheels. I just saw way more standard/offensive staple throws that missed the mark and well overthrown than I cared to. Panicked throws.

He’s for sure got a long future ahead of him.

Are you bored or something? Just say yes so this conversation can end.

What a weird series of posts from you.
I am bored. But I am also surprised you can’t watch a performance like that against a top defense in the nation and modify your opinion. I think that’s kinda weird.

I dunno... underdogs absolutely should come in talking schitt.
Why not? What do they have to lose?
But they might just let the big boys know they ain't scared of them....and when they keep getting back up and continuing the fight...then start making plays...it might just cause some doubt in their opponents....
They earned their respect...all those guys down talking the Devils being in the playoffs now know they were wrong.

Text from a scout on Cam Skattebo:“He’s as good as any [RB) in the class… that’s a badass dude you want on your side on Sundays.”High praise for one of the country’s premier playmakers who will be a headliner to watch at the Senior Bowl later this month.

That scout is flat wrong and clearly doesn't read football message boards...

Heroic performance, but I’m still not a believer in his professional future.

You’re also frustrated that I don’t share the same ASU-bias opinion as you that he’ll be a stud in the NFL. Maybe he will & I’ll own up to it. Until then, I will have my doubts. But once again, shoutout to him for his performance against Texas. Something I already admitted, that you even quoted, in the first place.

I can see jerry jones trading up to draft him in the first round. they better tie him up and put a sock in his mouth like they did when Johnny Manziel there.

No one is saying he is first-round talent. Scouts and others are just saying he belongs on an NFL roster and will likely do well on Sundays.

Yeah I was joking because jerry is an idiot. but he drafted Quincy Carter in the second round. anything is possible with him. thankfully has handlers.

Only thing a win would have done is deferred the tears another week…
Even if ASU won the physical toll this game took definitely would hinder them only a few days later, and playing an OSU team that is on a roll right now

I don’t have an asu bias with players. I’m a fan of asu, but I don’t fanboi players. And I don’t think he’ll be a “stud” in the nfl. I never said anything of the sort. But I do think he’s got nfl talent. Even if that means special teams or change of pace back. He’s definitely nfl rosterable which you stated he was not. And THAT’s what I was questioning. Not whether he gave a good performance. So you’re saying he had a heroic performance means little if you stay anchored to your he’s not an nfl player stance.
