Smith and not even close.

Yeah, as I alluded to earlier, gotta keep in mind that Smith has looked pretty good against better competition and Powell has looked very good against weaker competition. Who knows how each would look if they swapped roles/places on the depth chart all preseason.

I think Smith has done an admirable job. He's shown a few good plays here and there. But had to choose Powell. More athletic and shifty.

Really won't mind either on the roster. Though as stated by others, Smith is our best rb blitz picker upper. So in either sense I'm totally fine with it. Also I'd like to see Powell go against tougher competition. Maybe we'll have him work with the 1st immediately after wells/williams are done with their preseason work.

So Powell for the poll, but I also reserve ultimate judgment for a couple more weeks.

It may come down to "fit" within our offensive system - do we have any other RB with short yardage/between the tackles ability (Probably Beanie? But how sure are we that he'll be good to go when we need him)? Do we have any home run hitters other than Powell? (like Williams, LSH or maybe even Beanie)? Are LSH and Beanie locks to make it all the way back by Game #1?

If we really love Powell, would we consider packaging him or any other RB and a surplus WR &/or CB in a trade for a decent QB or LT?

Would be a good proactive front office move.

Umm, Shane hasn't posted here (sorry Shane that you get responsibility for my comments. Kind of funny, though).

But like I said in another thread. LSH is one of the top kick returners in the league. But that doesn't matter when the kickoff line is now at the 35 and everything is touchbacked.

That, IMO takes away 1/2 his value to the team.

He is a great receiving back, and very likable. Hope he makes it, but there are only 4 halfback slots on the roster and he is just not a great pure runner.

Never mind.. I see

You know.. Practically every year there is a story like this .. Kasper, Long, etc etc.. Some long shot that everyone falls in love with that ultimately does jack squat in the NFL.. Sure, I'd love to see it happen.. But let's be realistic..

Powell, I guess. I like Smith a lot for depth, though.

Is it a foregone conclusion that we can't keep both?

And, Shane, why don't you think LSH is a lock? Seems he's a core ST guy and someone the coaches love to put in the game on O for a handful of plays.

wasn't the organization just talking about their desire to extend LSH? I don't see him going anywhere

this is a sucky situation. I really like them both. Their styles are completely different, and both useful IMO. Can we keep em both and cut one of the questionable WRs instead?

I'm still stuck in the middle, I'm glad they will probably see a lot of time before the season starts. One might get smooshed knowing our luck.

I feel like this thread is very "what have you done for me lately". Powell killed that Oakland game, but didnt look great in the previous PS games. Smith, on the other hand, hasnt made any homerun plays, but has been consistent. 4-5 yards, nearly every touch.

I like consistency. So I have it going to Smith ATM, but I also expect Powell to get the job.

Bumpity bump bump bump.

LOVE the way WP runs. And again, comparing him to LSH is a bad comparison - they run very differently. I love the way WP attacks, attacks, attacks.

10 rushes 31 yards
9 rushes 92 yards 1 td
7 rushes 37 yards 1 td
7 rushes 71 yards 1 td
----------------------
33 rushes 231 yards 3 TD's @ 7 YPC

That's his preseason game log. Consistently ran the ball very well outside of one preseason game which was the opener vs nola.

Read somewhere that he leads the league in preseason rushing thus far

He's a beast.

Here's what I'd do: trade him to the Jets or the Colts. I love the kid, but we have a lot of depth at RB and are paper thin elsewhere. Let's see if we can't get either a player that helps us this season or a draft pick to help us in the future.

It's a real statement on our QB situation when Sanchez is a step up from what we have. I think he could help us challenge for the division.
