Apr. 18—HARROD — It was the rally to end all rallies. Or maybe it was just the rally that finally ended Allen East's 19-18 softball win over Columbus Grove after a game of wild swings of momentum on Monday afternoon.

The Mustangs led 7-2 after two innings but found themselves trailing Columbus Grove 9-8 by the top of the fifth inning.

They responded with six runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 15-9. That lead was short-lived, though, when Grove took advantage of four walks, four hit batters and an error to tie the game at 15-15 in the top of the sixth inning.

Allen East scored a run on a wild pitch and got another on a double by Taylor Nickles for a 17-15 lead after six innings, but Columbus Grove got three runs in the top of the seventh for an 18-17 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mustangs tied the game when a wild pitch scored a runner from third and Ava Morris' single scored the game winner.

Allen East coach Kelly Coble said, "I told them I was proud of them for fighting to the end and hustling everything out. I told them we were very nervous but glad they played it out to the end and got the victory."

The win was the first of the season for Allen East. And its offense, which produced 16 hits, played a big role in that win.

"We've been hitting the ball really well but just hitting it right at somebody. Today we were hitting it where there were some holes," Coble said.

Taylor Nichols led Allen East's offense, going 4 for 4, including three doubles, and driving in three runs.

Bronwyn Schaefer was 3 for 6 and scored three runs. Lauren Wireman and Harper Friesner both went 2 for 5 and drove in three runs. Morris was 3 for 4 and had two RBIs.

For Columbus Grove, Zoey Patchet was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and scored three runs. Dakota Dunn had two hits and four RBIs. Becca Hoover went 3 for 4 and Breanna Hoffman was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs.

Nichols, who has committed to UNOH to play basketball, had probably her best game of the season individually.

"I'm going to play basketball for UNOH but this is a pretty good sport in my heart. I had a struggle (hitting) last game but it's been pretty good. I've been struggling with getting past a double. I've been hitting the top of the fence. I just keep getting doubles," said the senior first baseman who hit three home runs as a junior.

If there are more doubles in her future, she's OK with that. "I've got seven or eight doubles this season. I'm going for that (school) record of 17," she said.
