It's odd how dissappointing this series has been. I mean, we're the 8th seed, we're a young team, and we're playing the best team in the league, but it has still been extremely frustrating. One of the reasons for this is our players' struggles. Obviously, the Spurs have a great defense and you have to give them credit for that, but come on. Not one player has played as well in this series as they have all year long. Not one!
If you consider shooting percentage alone of our guards alone, it's really quite amazing. Marbury is shooting 39%, Penny is shooting 40%, Marion is shooting 36%, and Joe Johnson is shooting 24% from the field! Not to mention the fact that, in Shawn Marion's attempt to prove once and for all that he is indeed a 3pt shooter, he has been successful only at proving the fact that he is not. Penny has been okay from long-distance, at 33%, but besides that nobody has shot better than Marion at 25%, followed by Joe Johnson at 22%, and Marbury in the mid-teens.
Joe Johnson has actually handed out more turnovers than assists, and Marion has an assist:turnover ratio of very close to 1:1. Penny's is alright at 1.6:1, and Stephon's is a little better at 1.9:1.
Marion actually has upped his rebounding to exactly 11 a game, which is good as every other number of his is down from the season about as far as down as those fosfluerescent fish in the abyss are from USAir Flight 1800 flying over the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Marbury has played well if you compare him to everybody else, but even his numbers have been down and quite suspect. The only person who has actually played alright is the 20 year old, Amare Stoudemire, who is only .1 points off his season average and about 1 board shy as well. He is, however, shooting 51% from the field, which is remarkable when you consider the two towers he's playing against.
All in all, if somebody told me our core of players were going to be playing like this in the first round against the best team in the league, I would have prepared myself for an embarrassing sweep if I hadn't laughed whoever it was out of my way. And the fact that we still have a pretty good chance at knocking the San Antonio Spurs out of the playoffs going into game 6 tomorrow night is at least somewhat reassuring. The truth is, if we can get it together, and start to make shots and handle the ball efficiently, as we have shown consistently during the season we can do, then this series is about to get mighty interesting mighty fast. The problem is, unfortunately, that we may not do that, and if we do, it could be too late.
