Boy, that's a little overboard cheese. Seriously.

I gave my view on why the "Tony was whacked" camp's evidence is weak, and put forth why I think my view is right. That's not definitively stating anything. In fact...see this again:

That's not definitive anything...

I hold a minority feeling of what I think was intended, my interpretation and I am defending against something that people point to articles as saying something else happened.

EVERYONE is saying they think they know what happened...and everyone is disagreeing. It is fun. Dropping "you're a moron or you don't know what art is" is bush.

The disagreement and different interpretations are fun. So what if I think my interpretation is right? It doesn't change the episode.

yup, you're right. i did go totally overboard there. my bad!

Wow! Now that was a good read!
Talk about taking "art" to another level. There you go Cheese.

I'm going to rewatch the episode tonight with all of this in mind.

Agreed. There is clues to go either way though. I rewatched and noticed something new: when Tony is browsing the songs the camera zooms in on the Tony Bennett (?) songs "A Lonely Place" and "I've got to be me" which can easily be applied to the reality that Tony is not going to change and that things will continue on. Also, he is about to put change into the jukebox when Meadow runs in and this could be literally interpreted as him about to "make change," but like it was throughout the series, something would stop him. We have been waiting for him to turn into a hero and it isn't going to happen, even after we are done watching. Both theories definitely hold their water though.

I've been convinced. Tony was shot by the Member's Only Guy.

I've read all theories on this, but this one takes the cake...

I read that too...don't buy it at all.

I honestly think Chase added so much to the episode to make sure it could be taken "any way you want it." (did you get that reference?)

The same reason Tony had his head on a swivel. He knew there was a chance remnants of a war still existed (Phil's execution).

I think Tony let his guard down. Just like Bobby.

You have to admit, everything that writer wrote about made pretty good sense. The Last Supper references, the funeral references, alluding to Member's Only Guy in the credits (when it could have just been "Guy Going To Use Restroom At Cafe".

The onion rings being compared to communion wafers was brilliant.

I had no idea the Sopranos was this symbolic. Pretty cool stuff after the fact.

Nothing happened.. The director left it wide open for everyone to speculate about.. So in theory, he didnt make an ending, just put a bunch of what if's out there..

I win..

The funeral references are garbage. All that stuff is just general catholic mass stuff, not funerals. The only funeral reference is the opening scene..

The last supper stuff is cool. Member's only guy...meh. I swear, someone could go in and make all kinds of other connections and have it make sense too.

Phil's execution was sanctioned...Tony was eating in public. *if* he was being whacked with no reason shown to the viewer, that is a bush league storyline IMO. It would have taken 30 seconds of screen time to set up a reason Tony'd get whacked...they didn't do that.

If he was hit, it was a crappy ending IMO because there was no plotline reasoning set forth. If the audience was whacked, I think it was brilliant because Chase has been famously angry with fans always wanting someone killed and blah blah blah violence blah blah blah....I find it very difficult to believe that he'd have Tony whacked which is exactly what we all wanted to have happen. Myself included. Chase bow down to the element of the fan base that he didn't care for? I don't think so.

Before AJ went suicidal, I always thought the end would be someone like Phil (or Paulie) killing Tony and then the last thing we saw as viewers was that person getting smoked, then a shot of AJ dropping the gun...the cycle continuing. I think that would have been a great ending, but then he tried to drown himself with ten feet of rope in a nine foot pool and there was no chance my picture perfect ending would take place.

Didn't the ducks come back? I thought that was how the show was going to end. With the ducks landing in Tony's pool.

d-dog, that would have been the most cliched hackeneyed end to a brilliant show that I could ever imagine. AJ's never had the balls to pull off a stunt like that. it would completely go against every episode that featured him ever written.

After a week to think about it, I have no real beef with the end of the show the way it is. The only thing that irritates me is that half the episode is dedicated to the worst character on the show, one that next to no-one seems to care about.

If you're going to go out with a bang go out with a bang. Phil's demise was great, and I can totally understand why Chase ended the show the way he did. But don't spend the episode all on AJ.

Yeah, but I actually always liked AJ...he reminds me so much of my ef up brother in law..only more stable. I wanted him to "win" in the end.

I thought that was the way they were going when he was running with those gambling guys at the college...little soprano and all.

Dodie, I hate gangster flicks and I can find no redeeming value in content like The Godfather. Those movies seem to celebrate the mob ethic, which I abhor. I still got drawn into this show. It's different because it's constantly pitting "made" life to the rest of the American culture, especially suburban culture. It attempts to explain a difficult mind set without actually apologizing for it. You don't have to root for anyone necessarily. It's more of a voyeur kind of experience without a recognizable catharsis.

Funny, you feel that way considering the the Sopranos is filled with references and homage to the Godfather.

The Godfather references and homages always felt like an inside joke. Art imitating life imitating art imitating life.
