The San Antonio Spurs have targeted Corey Maggette and are the front-runners to sign the Los Angeles Clippers’ free agent forward, multiple league sources said Tuesday night.
While no deal was imminent, Maggette would be expected to sign a multi-year deal for the mid-level exception, a move that would fulfill the Spurs’ desperate need for perimeter athleticism and scoring. Maggette would be leaving the Clippers, just as the team came to an agreement with Golden State free agent Baron Davis on a contract. With so much sudden salary cap space, the Warriors could be a threat to swoop in and take Maggette for themselves. The Boston Celtics have also shown serious interest in Maggette.

Another team with salary cap room, the Philadelphia 76ers, will present Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith an offer sheet on Wednesday when he visits with Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski in Philadelphia, two league sources said.

The Spurs struggled to generate points in the Western Conference finals against the Los Angeles Lakers and believe Maggette could make a dramatic impact as a complement to Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Clippers, who expect now to quickly re-sign free agent Elton Brand.
The Spurs had targeted Maggette as an explosive offensive addition to an offense that struggled to generate points in the Western Conference finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Clippers, who expect now to quickly re-sign free agent Elton Brand.

Maggette, 28, opted out of his contract with the Clippers on Monday, along with Brand. He had hopes of returning to the Orlando Magic, but the Spurs, who have an interest in Denver restricted free agent J.R. Smith and Detroit free agent Jarvis Hayes, made an aggressive push in the last 24 hours to sell Maggette on playing an important part in restoring them to a championship team.
“He’s going to take a lot of the offensive load off (Manu) Ginobili, but (Spurs coach Gregg) Popovich will have to hide him defensively on the floor,” a Western Conference scout said Tuesday night.

Maggette can sign on July 9, once the NBA’s moratorium on free agents is lifted.

Hell ****ing yes.

Wow, you guys have automatic censorship. Although I don't like it, I still think that's pretty cool that it's automatic.

Forcing people to have some class is definitely a plus in this situation.

The rich getting richer, hopefully there are some scraps left we can scrounge up after everyone else improves.

Well, there's their Finley replacement...

IMO an upgrade at that. The Suns better make some moves to counter. Baron to the Clips, CM to the Spurs. The West is going to just get better around the Suns.

We couldn't beat the Spurs as is and have not done anything yet to make us better then them yet. Come on Suns.....we need to get the trade express moving and make some moves.

Isn't the mid-level less that the amount he opted out of?

Looks like the Spurs won't stop trying to own us for the next few years.

Why the heck should we care that much about matching up with the Spurs? The Lakers won the west and with Bynum's return should be even better. We lost all 4 games to the Hornets last year and for the second straight year lost the season series to the Jazz (now 2-7 against them in the last 2 seasons).

I am not crazy about maggette. He will go to the spurs and be a guy who likes to play inside, on a team that already has guys that like to play inside,( Duncan, Parker, Manu can shoot but likes he inside)

Good player just not sure how he fits on the spurs. Thought they would try and sign a guy to replace Finley, and Berry(outside shooting).

Face it: Sarver wont use the MLE this season. Our only FA additions will come as veteran minimum guys. I bet we resign Skinner and Marks then get a PG

If GS does swoop in and take Maggette, we might have a chance to get Azubuike for 1/2 the MLE. Or, after losing Davis, they might want LB to play the backcourt partner to Ellis, say, for Pietrus and Azubuike.

Corey will get an assload of more money offered from somewhere else and will sign there, these types of deals never happen.

I can understand the possibility of him taking a one year deal at the MLE, but a multi year deal is so much bs considering the money he could get, free agents never settle for a paycut for multiple years.

Normally there are 4 or 5 teams with cap space. This year there is only 2. Corey won't get the big deal he wants.

Which is why I mentioned him maybe taking a single year at a paycut but not signing a multi-year deal.

Now with the Baron signing though I could see him actually taking one year with the clippers instead if he is going to wait until next year to seek a deal.

why would he take a paycut on a 1 year deal? If he wanted a 1 year deal, he wouldn't have opted out.

Magette will not get the spacing on the floor for the spurs as he has no outside shot. He is a nice player, but the spurs just downgraded their outside shooting. Magette used to play well against the suns before the sun got big inside, not sure what he will do now. The clippers with baron davis, elton brand, kaman, and company have really upgraded themselves. If they get a little more outside shooting and baron stays healthy, they could be a tough group. The spurs will rebuild past magette, perhaps they will also take jarvis hayes away from the suns, that would be bufords style.

maggette makes his living at the line. he always has against us. that just spells more foul trouble for our bigs against the spurs.
