The Arizona Cardinals, now flush with cap room after submitting Larry Fitzgerald's $40 million contract, reached an agreement in principle with Steelers quarterback Brian St. Pierre.

The Cardinals plan to go into camp with Matt Leinart as the starter and Kurt Warner as the backup, but St. Pierre was acquired as an insurance policy. St. Pierre will be reunited with Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was his offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh.

St. Pierre, 28, agreed to a one-year deal, and planned to go to Phoenix on Monday and sign the contract.

St. Pierre was a fifth-round draft choice of the Steelers in 2003. He went to the Ravens in 2005 but he returned to the Steelers for the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

There goes Rattay/Hasselback. I doubt we carry 4 QB's.

The move just made too much sense, Joe. St. Pierre knows the system even better than ML right now. Whiz likes him, and always has. He was available. That simple. The fact that St. Pierre is a BC alum also excites me...I thought he was better that Matt Hasselbeck in college.

I also am cognizant of the fact that Leinart still has a visible bone lump on his shoulder (per Urban)..and Warner, last seen raising 5 lb. weights on training day, is one hit from retirement.

Last year we needed the #3...and could this year. St. Pierre is the best option, IMO...other than Kelly Holcomb...but Holcomb still commands more than the vet minimum.

Should we just change the team name to the Stealers? :lame:

Well, if we win, then Whiz was smart for bringing in guys that "know his system". If he loses, like Denny did with his Vikings guys, then he "plays favorites".

But, all coaches do this to some extent.

Yay! A guy who couldn't beat Charlie Batch out of a job!

Still, he's better than Tim Hasselback, I guess. He'll be interesting to see in camp.

This is a good signing. Graves and Co. seem to be doing much better now that the Fitz debacle is over.

You can't compare that IMO.

Whiz has brought in role players to back-up positions - not has-beens to carry the team. Haggans is the first ex-Steeler brought in with a possible chance of being a starter.

Wasn't this the guy that pretended that he was Ben Rothelisberger?? I remember some sort of that story.

I agree. The difference is, Whiz actually HAS a system. Seriously, did Denny Green even have a system? If so, I have no idea what it was.
