jurecki and lewis were talking and jurecki made a comment to lewis:: "you and I both know they are getting close on naming rights for new stadium"

first I have heard of some action..seems jurecki and lewis have heard something is in the works.

on another note - lewis said the cardinals are having busses taking former and current players and their wives to groundbreaking..leaving from tempe and going to glendale on saturday..since lewis is a former cardinal he is taking the bus..

I am shocked they are close to giving up the naming rights. I find it strange a company would offer up the money so early in the whole process...especially in this economy. Good for them if it is true.

Pinnacle, if you remember the ASFN article I wrote (shameless plug I guess) one of the areas I felt the Cards HAD to improve was the relationship with their former players. Hopefully this is the first baby step in an effort to bring the family back together.

I wonder how the `Yotes are coming on naming that new arena.

Yotes have already announced Budweiser will own the naming rights to it...if I remember hearing that about a week ago.

I live farily close to the new arena and it's looking nice. The other day they put the final roof girder in place. It's supposed to be complete at the beginning of December. I can't wait.

They'll need Budweisers, plenty of them, after hauling out to Glendale in rush hour to see the Yotes....

It's probably smarter to do it now than wait until the economy gets better. In 2 years the pricetag might double.

From the 4/3/2003 AZ Republic:

The Coyotes also announced Wednesday that Anheuser-Busch Inc. has signed a five-year deal as a "founding partner" of the Glendale arena. It will pay a "substantial" sum for naming rights to an outdoor pavilion at the north entrance, said Dave Groff, senior vice president for corporate sales.

Ah, so that isn't for the whole stadium, just a pavillion. I remember when I heard Budweiser mentioned I though it strange they would name the whole stadium since their name is already on the baseball stadium in STL...via ownership of course. Seemed strange and this now makes sense. I never heard the pavillion part of it.

call me old fashioned, but naming rights to a stadium just make me want to puke. i know, the money and all that. but just look at all of the dumb sounding stadiums out there now. examples: minute maid park in houston, US Cellular Field instead of Comiskey Park in Chicago, Qualcomm in San Diego instead of Jack Murphy, and even Papa John's Stadium at the University of Louisville. I would love to see a "Cardinals Stadium" - similar to Cleveland Browns Stadium or Yankee Stadium. We could all call it the Birds' Nest. I know it'll never happen, but I hope it's not like http://www.insight.com/cardinals stadium or something. How about ASFN Field?

denver bird,

If you don't like the fact that corporations pay tens of millions of dollars for brand penetration for naming rights, put up the money yourself and call it whatever you want.

Otherwise, realize that this is big business, the very reason you are allowed to go to beautiful new stadiums and watch sporting events.

As long as they keep the beer cheap. Say, around $8.
And make the nachos reasonable... say around $5.50 or so.

Then I'll be perfectly happy.

Here it comes.....

Get ready........

I believe in Cleveland and Cincinnati, they were able to just sell naming rights to the various concourses and/or entrances to the building. Therefore, still taking in the revenue, but being able to name the stadium what they want.

My guess is that it would be easier (and potentially better fiscally) to just have a corporation just by the naming rights outright.

Take a look also at Lambeau Field, which stays the same even after a massive renovation (which made that stadium look great BTW). They have sold naming rights to each entry gate as well as other things so they could keep the stadium name the same. Look for Soldiers Field to do the same since they have said, at least in the short term, the name will not change.

I wonder if it is actually better fiscally to name concourses, gates etc and leave the stadium un named.

<p>That was just a rumour. Because of the shape of the stadium, it's actually going to be called "Diaphragm Stadium".

I don't care what the name is. Other stadiums sell PSLs to finacne part of the cost. I'm glad we won't have that.

I'd love it if Poore Brother's Potato Chips bought the rights:

Poore Boy Stadium!

I'll bet Dial, Intel, or some other corportate conglomerate will jump in.

I assume that the market is such in those places (Chi-town, GB) where it's easier to make money doing piddly stuff like naming concourses, etc. In weaker (not smaller) markets, like AZ, you can't get as much cash (which is what it's all about) naming concourses, because you don't get the brand exposure to all the fans. No one's going to pay $2.5 mil to have a gate named after their company if only 10K people are going to see it every game.

Also, I assume that naming rights at Soldier and Lambeau fields weren't even on the table.

This is "new" news, if naming rights are on hold for Soldier Field and Lambeau Field. Last I heard, the Packers were trying to accelerate getting the naming rights secured, and the Bears were going to insist that the word "Soldier" be included in any naming rights package. Has this changed? I'll go back through my sources (I used to maintain a Sports Facilities news mailing list), and see if these teams have changed direction.

AS far as Lambeau is concerned, there was talk of them selling the naming rights but the tax payers freaked out since it was done on their dollar and at least temporarily, the Packers are not going to sell the rights. By temporary that means nothing in the short term but they did leave to door open somewhere down the road. The thing they have going for them up there is the desire for any and every business to have ties to the Packers so it makes it easier to sell that stuff.

Again, similar thing happened to the Bears in that public outcry was very high that they also said, for the short term, they would not sell naming rights and it would stay strictly Soldiers Field. Future can change that but for right now no corporations in the name...last I had heard. One of the arguments (and likely court cases) was the fact it the stadium was a monument honoring fallen soldiers...and naming it after a corporation would be wrong (against the law?) much like making it the Snapple Washington Monument or something.

These were the last things I had heard...and this was awhile ago but I haven't heard a peep since so I am assuming this still stands.
