For one, Rick Reilly is a tool. For two, Pat Tillman wouldnt want that. For three, losing out on tens of millions of naming revenue is stupid.

While that would be a nice gesture, is Reilly going to give the Cardinals the 30-50 million that naming rights would generate?

Is Reilly then going to advocate that every other NFL team void their naming rights deals, so as to level the playing field?

The entire plaza that surrounds the stadium. The "Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza". Will be formally dedicated on Veteran's Day.

Good one!!

On another note, I'm not a big fan of naming stadiums and peaks after single veteran (Piestewa Peak). They aren't any better than all the veterans who have fought for this country over the years. My grandfather fought in the hills of Italy and on a beaches of Normandy in the WWII and he carried a bullet in his arm and the emotional scars until his death two years ago. Those were courageous men in WWII. If it wasn't for the men and women of that time, we'd all be speaking German.

That's great and all, but none of them played for the Cardinals. If you can't make the connection between this one person, and the Cardinals, then you aren't looking at it right.

Nothing against Tillman. The Freedom Plaza is already named after him --and rightly so.

I don't think the Stadium itself needs to follow. Leave that for a corporate sponsor because this team needs the money to be competitive.

That's probably not true. The Cards have been around since 1920's so they probably had some WWII veterans on the team. Especially since almost every able bodied male at the time was in the service in one capacity or another.

The naming stuff can get out of hand like at Texas where you have the Neihaus Complex at Joe Jamail Field at Darrel K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium sponsored by Pepsi. :D

During WWII, the team lost half of it's players to fight in the war. That's why they became the "Carpits", having to merge with Pittsburgh to field an entire team.

That was Pittsburgh and Philly - the Steegles.

He was right. Chicago Cards and Pittsburgh teamed up one season at least (1944). They were the pits alright losing all of their games.

Here's one vet I found:

Adding their World War II stories to the documentary will be Al DeMao, a center for the Washington Redskins. who commanded a landing craft on Omaha Beach on D-Day, and Len Teeuws, a tackle with the Chicago Cardinals and now a DAV Transportation Network driver, who served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter USS Bibb in the North Atlantic and Europe.

In 1942, owing to player shortages caused by World War II, the Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers merged for one year and were known as the "Car-Pitts", or "Carpets".

Wow - didn't know that - how come the Steegles get all the glory?

Couldn't agree more. There are several individuals and groups that I feel are improperly labeled as "Anti-Cardinals." Then there's Reilly, who has an absolutely transparent hatred for the Cards. I'm sure he knows about the plaza, and knows that they are going to choose a corporate sponsor for the stadium. He's just trying to set up the Bidwills so that he can roast them again as he usually does about this time of year.

I can't find the entire article he wrote last year, just this excerpt...

"Some people collect medieval torture devices. Others devote themselves to the study of plagues. Me, I just follow the Arizona Cardinals.
Every year I circle the day on my calendar when the Cards open camp and really begin sucking in earnest. They have a Commitment to Wretchedness -- 58 years since they won an NFL title, one playoff win in that time and one winning season in the last 20.

All that couldn't have happened without Bill and Michael Bidwill, a father-son ownership team that could mess up a one-float parade. Since then-Chicago Cardinals owner Charles Bidwill died in 1947, the franchise has been the Pinto of the NFL. Owned until '62 by Charles's widow, Violet, and since by his son, Bill, the Bidwills have somehow made the No. 1 sport in America about as popular in the Arizona desert as down ski parkas."

here is what Wikipedia says:

Card Pitt was the name for the team created by the temporary merger of two National Football League (NFL) teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago Cardinals, during the 1944 season. The teams were forced to merge because both had lost many players to military service due to World War II. After the season the merger was dissolved. The two teams together did not do so well as the combined team with 0-10 record in the Western Division. The Steelers had previously combined with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1943 as the "Steagles".

I completely understand that naming rights money is pretty much a necessity, especially for one of the least revenue producing teams in the NFL.

I like the idea that DP had of doing something unique with the 40 yard line at least at "soon to be renamed to a corporate entity" stadium in Glendale.

Whether Pat was killed by friendly fire or not is immaterial to the discussion.

Yeah, it was '44 not '42.

This information was in the press release for the Pre Season game against the Steelers. You can find it on page 11.

Also mentioned that Michael Bidwill wanted the Steelers for the first game because of the "unique history between the two teams".

Didn't know that.

Rick Riley is a fool.

He called out Michael Bidwill and basically said Michael has never done anything good for their community.

Well how about 1 year ago when Michael used his private plane to personally fly supplies to Katrina victims.

I did like Dan's idea of doing something special with the 40 yard line to memorialize Tillman.
