On another note, I'm not a big fan of naming stadiums and peaks after single veteran (Piestewa Peak). They aren't any better than all the veterans who have fought for this country over the years. My grandfather fought in the hills of Italy and on a beaches of Normandy in the WWII and he carried a bullet in his arm and the emotional scars until his death two years ago. Those were courageous men in WWII. If it wasn't for the men and women of that time, we'd all be speaking German.

Scott MS said:During WWII, the team lost half of it's players to fight in the war. That's why they became the "Carpits", having to merge with Pittsburgh to field an entire team.

Duckjake said:He was right. Chicago Cards and Pittsburgh teamed up one season at least (1944). They were the pits alright losing all of their games.
Here's one vet I found:
Adding their World War II stories to the documentary will be Al DeMao, a center for the Washington Redskins. who commanded a landing craft on Omaha Beach on D-Day, and Len Teeuws, a tackle with the Chicago Cardinals and now a DAV Transportation Network driver, who served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter USS Bibb in the North Atlantic and Europe.

Scott MS said:In 1942, owing to player shortages caused by World War II, the Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers merged for one year and were known as the "Car-Pitts", or "Carpets".
Dback Jon said:here is what Wikipedia says:
Card Pitt was the name for the team created by the temporary merger of two National Football League (NFL) teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago Cardinals, during the 1944 season. The teams were forced to merge because both had lost many players to military service due to World War II. After the season the merger was dissolved. The two teams together did not do so well as the combined team with 0-10 record in the Western Division. The Steelers had previously combined with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1943 as the "Steagles".
