Thanks to everyone who wrote good things about this movie. You convinced me to go. I loved it. The last several Star Treks didn't excite me at all so I wasn't going to see this one.

Great movie. They used humor very well IMO.

Did anyone think that Bones was a little "Too Bones" for this? I cringed with the "Dammit Jim!" comment. I guess they had to but it seemed contrived to me.

LOVED THE MOVIE!!!!!!!

actually thought his character was the best casted and his lines were used perfectly.

Did you think it sounded contrived when scotty stated "I'm giving it all she's got captain"

Yeah, Karl Urban was my one big casting worry, and he turned in one of the best performances. Very well done.

Agree 100%
There wasn't enough Bones.;)
Scotty was also very good along with Kirk,Spock and Chekov.
I thought the Sulu & Uhura character's were the weakest.

Finally saw this today and thought it was outstanding. I loved the original show, the rest of the versions, not so much.

I'm amazed that they actually pulled off:

1.) Bringing back all the original characters and re-casting them with choices that all worked.

2.) Came up with such a clever plot that they can move forward from here reintroducing pretty much whatever they want from the old show AND still take the original crew in any new direction they want.

I can't wait to see the next one!

Saw it last night and agree with every positive thing people have had to say about it. Casting was fantastic, special effects beyond belief and the plot twist that allows for a new day in Star Trek was clever and simply worked. 4.99 out of 5 stars for me.

The point 01 that didn't work for me is broken into 2 parts:

1. Ok.... I admit it.... I'm an old Trekkie..... I watched it when it originally ran on TV, watched and enjoyed it in re-reruns, went to the theatre for all 6 movies, I own the movies on DVD and just ordered 1-6 on BluRay.... but no, I do not own a toy phaser or tricorder, nor do I prance around in a tight blue shirt with foam pointy ears on.... ;) Anyway, this made it a little tough for me to take in a few areas... Spock's romance for one and a plot twist or two that kinda grated on my well embedded ST memories (pun intended). I got past them but it was a bit bumpy for me.

2. Just about everyone in the movie kicked Kirk's arse. One of the cool (and laughed about) plot regularities in the original show was that every week, Kirk kicked all the bad alien's arses, and somehow always manged to schtupp the beatiful alien women. Even in Star Trek 7 (where Kirk and Picard are in the plot together) it was Kirk who had to kick Soran's {Malcom McDowell} butt. So in this one, even though he put up a pretty brave fight in the bar at the start of the movie, he kind of came off as sort of a mouthy punk instead of the tough guy Kirk we knew from the TV series and the first 6.

That little .01% aside, I can't wait for the next one. WOO-HOO!! Star Trek lives again!!

Look at it this way. Kirk had to takes his lumps and get a little seasoning before he turned into the kick-ass he-man he became in the show.

I really loved this movie.

I really hated this McCoy. He was very *******, for lack of a better term. I hated every single time he talked...just did not like the way he overacted Bones, even though Bones was an overactor anyway. For whatever reason, I just did not like him. At all. Really, that's the only thing I didn't like about it all. JT Kirk was very good, shocking really. Thought I'd hate him. Sylar WAS spock...couldn't have cast it better.

It was a very, very good movie. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

Bones was crap.

Sulu I kept wondering when he'd bust out a joint and smoke out.

Checkov was GREAT. Uhura...meh. Spock, 100 percent legit. Kirk? Totally bought it. Scottie??? PERFECT!!!

Bones was crap though. Crap.

BTW, JJ had a great story with the good effects, too.

My kids just watched the first episode of ST the other day. I think I'll have them watch at least half of the first season, then I'll have them watch this.

Is JJ doing another one??

Wow, I thought Bones was awesome. I thought they were all fantastic man :)

Pine was amazing in that last scene when he sort of "strutted" onto the bridge...he looked so much like Shatner/Kirk it was scary!

While they were all damned good Bones was by far the best casted character in the entire film. Donald doesnt know what hes talking about. :)

That was freaking perfect. He HAD the Kirk look and feel at that point. Complete badass, and knowing it. Loved that part.

He looked like McCoy, but I thought he was a bad actor. And I know he was supposed to be playing a character that was overacted originally, but dammit Shane, he's a hack, not an actor.

I simply cringed every time that guy was on the screen. Do not want. Not at all.

And Bones was one of my favorites from the original series.

When the casting was announced, I cringed that Urban was playing Bones. When I watched him in the movie, I thought he did a damn fine job and had one of the better performances of any of the cast. Urban was an excellent McCoy.

If I closed my eyes when Urban was speaking I coulda swore it was De Kelly and I grew up on TNG and loved the movie after a few viewings.

For just a second, i was going to re-think my opinion of his performance based on the intensity of your dislike of him. But, then I remembered you actually liked "Twilight". I'd drink a cup of my own vomit before I'd watch "Twlight " again.

So, i still think the actor who played McCoy did a great job! :D

LOL.

I expected two girls and a cup for Twilight, and I was very pleased with the actual product.

I'll reserve final death sentence on Urban for a second viewing. But if I still think he sucks, then he's dead to me!!! DEAD TO ME!

I really liked the film, the actors etc but.....
I didn't like the over-convoluted-time plot line. They(writers, producers) didn't have to do that in order to carry on the franchise and make more movies. It basically says
(to me) that the rest of the movies are BS.
It wasn't necessary IMO. There are plenty of possible stories and adventures untapped thru the given fact that this young crew went on their 5 year mission soon after the premise of this film(Star Trek XI).
Didn't need a an old Spock cameo or the convienient outcome of wiping out Trekkie history.
Having said that, i still look forward to seeing this cast & crew in the next one :D.

I for one loved the reset. I think it gives the writers much more freedom. There is so much set in stone that I think you would have tied the hands of the writers to get every single little thing correct and event correct. Asking a writer to write in a tiny little bubble would limit creativity IMO.

I also don't think that it says the rest of the movies are BS since you don't know which events will still happen (that we know to be true). My guess is that certain major events in Trek History will remain the same.

i agree that it gives them freedom ..... it will also help curb the dopey debates about what could/should/would happen and constant comparisons to how they fit with the original run

they wanted to respect the history of the franchise, while making it more modern and appealing to a broad audience ....... i think they did a phenomenal job at this and were able to keep many fans of the original franchise while tapping into many people who just didn't care for the originals

now the challenge is to keep things energetic and fresh and not waste the reset that you gave yourself
