As someone who has maybe seen 1 or 2 episodes of Star Trek, this movie was awesome. Better than Iron Man, or any other recent summer blockbuster in memory.

My only problem was the fact that our "IMAX" screen was dirty as hell. Extremely distracting during any normal scenes. Almost to the point of wanting to walk out and get our money back. I'm still a little mad about it.

For anyone who hasn't gone yet, DON'T goto AMC 30. (Theater 7)

In the hopes of putting your mind at ease, I humbly submit a different perspective. Considering that the job of Starfleet is to boldly go where no one has gone before and seek out new life forms, wouldn't they be trained to not react with shock or awe when meeting new life forms? Especially when you consider that the romulans looked very similar to vulcans and humans compared to some of the other creatures on the Kelvin. I'd imagine that the romulans would have to be some of the more normal looking of the creatures they'd encountered, so they'd probably hardly bat and eyelash when Nero showed up.

Just my two cents.

I totally agree with you but this situation was different. There is another race that looks exactly like the Vulcans. The Vulcans are suppose to be your allies but clearly have not shared the information or knowledge with you about the "sister" race. I would say that shock would be part of the equation in that scenario.

These Romulans were bald and had tats all over their heads. Hardly looking exactly like the vulcans. There are many, many races in the trek universe with pointed ears and eyebrows. When one sees this brand of Romulan one doesn't say "hey they look like vulcans".

When the Captain went over to their ship, you could obviously tell they were the same race as the Vulcans..bald or not. They were not all wearing hats. Again, it's just a minor thing. No biggie but still a mistake.

Honestly, with all they got right in this movie and the reset of the time line....I thought JJ did a fantastic job.

They looked unlike any Romulans ever seen before on screen in the Trek universe. I don't see them obviously as being the same race as vulcans, at least not from the POV of the Kelvin. Not a mistake IMO.

We will have to agree to disagree then. Different clothes, bald or otherwise, if you had no frame of reference, your assumption would be they were Vulcans just like the Enterprise crew did in the original series with their first encounter with the Romulans.

On to other topics. What did you guys think of the new phasers? Also, anybody else think they could easily say Kirk doesn't die in this timeline?

In a van...down by the river.
Saw this last night. Given that i'm a Star Trek die-hard(grew up with the original series on syndication, watched TNG also, own all the movies including the the originals on DVD) I that that it was pretty good. Definately well done and kudos to Abrahms and co.I didn't like the element or the complexity of the time/paradox theme but these young actors did a fine job capturing the essence of these legendary characters. There was a story driven plot instead of just a special effects driven plot(i was really concerned about that going in). All in all i'd grade it out a B+
Looking forward to the next installment:D

I'd say more but how do i use spoiler codes?

I'm convinced I could splice together all the previews and have 92 percent of the movie, minus the credits

Nichols plays a cadet at Starfleet Academy. I have loved her since her stint on ALIAS.

she was the green chick (who is also a cadet)

i like baird, but do not see her at all on the credits

it was definitely nichols - one article mentions how she had to dye her hair red for both this and GI Joe ...... a 2nd mentions some of her quotes about green makeup again

this one confirms it without a doubt

Nichols plays an Orion, known to Star Trek followers as the green-skinned staples of the galactic sex trade. She became the center of speculation after two quick shots of an underwear-clad actor Christopher Pine, who plays Kirk, appeared in bed atop a woman in a trailer for the Star Trek reboot.

It was Pine who first leaked to E! Online confirmation that his companion was, in fact, Nichols' character.

Conflicting info.

However, after looking at this picture again...I agree it is Rachel Nichols. Doira Baird I guess originally had the part and was cut.

Finally saw it.

Excellent film, diminished only by the poor quality of the sound in the theatre (so many people underestimate the affect of the sound-system in movies.)

JJ Abrams is a genius:

He reinvents the franchise in perfect Star Trek fashion by using time travel.
Plenty of "homages" to the original series.

Great movie. They used humor very well IMO.

Did anyone think that Bones was a little "Too Bones" for this? I cringed with the "Dammit Jim!" comment. I guess they had to but it seemed contrived to me.

LOVED THE MOVIE!!!!!!!

Diora Baird Talks About Her Role as An Orion in Star Trek

Maxim: So you’re an alien?

Baird: Um, I would assume so—unless I was born with a skin disease. In the original series, there were these infamous green women that Captain Kirk would hit on, and so without giving too much away, I’m one of those green girls.

Then IMDB say this about Rachel Nichols character Gaila in the movie.

Cadet Gaila is a red-headed Orion woman, who is Cadet Uhura's roommate. Thus we can conclude that she is in Kirk's, Uhura's, and McCoy's graduating class. In the film, she tells Jim Kirk "I think I love you," right before Uhura walks in on their make-out session. The movie doesn't indicate whether or not Gaila is assigned to the Enterprise and therefore survives the battle of Vulcan. It seems unlikely she would not be a repeat character, however, and she may appear in future films.

Orions are green-skinned humanoids, and Orion women have appeared throughout Star Trek as "slave girls," i.e. concubines. Although in Enterprise (TV Series), it is suggested that Orion society is matriarchal. The slavery aspect of the society does not subdue the women, but rather enables them to move about "freely" by commanding their masters to sell the women to whom the women wish.

Orion women are known for sexual prowess and appetites that are beyond the capacities of other species. Naturally, the character of the womanizing Kirk would gravitate towards her hypersexuality. This makes for a potentially super charged relationship that is, well, characteristically Kirk. Gaila, although 'civilized' Federation citizen seems to still live an active sex life. Gaila: "My roommate [Uhura] asked me to stop bringing men back to the room." Kirk: "How many have you brought back here?"

It should be noted that Cadet Gaila is not a slave -- the Federation has outlawed slavery. Joining Starfleet is counter to the Orion culture, which can be summarized as a pirate culture. There is certainly an interesting, unknown character story to be told. Perhaps she was adopted by Federation parents.
