With the Pittsburgh Steelers trading away their 2024 second-round pick to land star wide receiver DK Metcalf, fans have been buzzing about how the move impacts their draft strategy. One Steelers fan asked the question on everyone’s mind: will the Steelers trade back in the first round to regain a Day 2 pick?
According to Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, that’s not likely.
“I don’t get a sense of that at all,” Kaboly wrote, responding to the idea of a first-round trade-back. “I am sure Omar Khan is antsy to get back into the second round and might package a pair of picks from next year to move from 83 overall up 25-30 picks and into the mid-to-late second round if it presents itself.”
Still, Kaboly made it clear that it won’t be easy. “Two picks still might not get that done,” he added.
So what’s the only realistic way the Steelers get back into the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft? Kaboly didn’t mince words: “I’d say that the only way they do get back into the second round is if they decide to trade [George] Pickens.”
That’s a huge if. Trading George Pickens would shake up the Steelers’ offense in a major way, especially after pairing Metcalf with him seemed to set up a dominant receiving duo.
Unless the Steelers pull off a major move — like a Pickens trade — fans shouldn’t count on seeing Pittsburgh in the second round this year. Still, with General Manager Omar Khan known for being aggressive, anything is on the table as the NFL draft approaches.
