Apr. 1—The Austin softball team struggled with their bats and their gloves as they lost to Stewartville 7-0 in the PackerDome Tuesday.
Austin freshman pitcher KJ Schaefer scattered 10 hits as she didn't register a walk while allowing two earned runs and five strikeouts. The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third in a frame that only saw them hit it out of the infield twice and they added three more runs in the top of the fourth.
"Unfortunately we did not complete the basics well. That really hurt us," Austin head coach Lisa Lage said. "We're really teaching them that they've got to get out of their heads and move on. They also need to understand that those things can't continue from game to game."
The Packers (1-1 overall) had just one baserunner in the game when freshman Charlee Cunningham singled in the bottom of the fourth. Stewartville pitcher Sydney Klar struck out 15.
"We have a lot of younger girls who haven't seen that speed before," Lage said. "She's a great pitcher, she has movement on the ball and I think it was a real eye opener. That's the same type of pitcher that we're going to see from (Mankato) East, West, Winona and Byron; all of the teams that are competitive in our section and conference. I think it was a good preview for the girls to see what we're going against."
