That wipes out the first week of preseason games — which begin Wednesday at US Airways Center against the Atlanta Hawks and concludes with a road trips to Utah (Thursday) and Palm Springs, Calif., (Saturday) for the outdoor game with Denver at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. And Stoudemire could miss more if the timetable has to be adjusted in any way.

Wearing dark sunglasses at Friday night’s Orange-White scrimmage, Stoudemire said he will likely wear goggles for the rest of his career to avoid going through the pain and anxious moments following the injury Wednesday night.

one guy? how about nash, barbosa, the rookies, and even diaw?
Understatement. Having Barbs learn to defend even remotely would free him up to start and bring Bell off the bench instead which IMO would be advantageous in terms of playing with Hill,Dragic,Lopez and co. Not to mention having Barbosa's offensive firepower in the starting 5.

Yeah, its more important to have the rookies and your old undersized PG learn defense than your foul prone PF. Clearly amare needs to learn defense, EVERYONE here knows that, he's a defensive liability down low. As for Diaw, his defensive assignment had a 12.2 per last year, not too shabby(amares assignment was around 20). What diaw could use is more size, put some muscle on, if they intend to use him to guard 4's. I guess amares defensive development will have to wait until the regular season, after he gets back in shape. Pokes in the eye are apparently pretty common, Noah got poked in the eye in bulls practice yesterday, he will be out 5 days.

remind me where i ever said it was more important. i just said amare isn't the only guy who needs to learn defense, which is a true statement.

Yep, but those others guys havent missed 3 of the past 4 preseasons, and then complained that nobody helped him on defense. Yeah I know he was injured, and perhaps thats why he doesnt know any defensive fundamentals, like basic foot work, positioning. Preseason is THE time for the teaching of fundamentals, not the regular season. Defensive schemes are one thing, fundamentals are another. Very few NBA teams teach fundamentals during the season.

i agree, amare's troubles are in his fundamentals. I think the fact that he is so naturally athletic almost forces him to try and use athleticism rather than fundamentals. He can shot block very well, but that is mostly due to athleticism. I hope porter and his staff work on keeping amare fundamentally sound on defense, i think that'll make a world of difference

Agreed, amare needs to learn the fundamentals of defense, and its unfortunate that he keeps missing the preseason, where that is taught. I just dont want to hear him complaining how he wasnt taught, he hasnt put in the time, it obvious to me. For those of you who think cartwright is a great big man coach, gee I dunno, he was never a very good defender as a player. He actually had a bad rep on defense, his saving grace was his low post offensive game. IMO Ivaroni was a better fundamental defender than cartwright ever was, it was the reason he was in the league. I am doubtful that cartwright is as good as ivaroni, but ANY improvements in amares fundamental defense will be useful. It all starts inside amares head, though.

Bench Stoudemire until December. He can have his training camp during the first month of the season.

My fault I should have phrased my original post better.

Amare is the one player on our roster who, if he could learn how to defend properly, would see the greatest improvement in his overall game.

It sounds like the goggles are a done deal. However, Amare has a lot of conditioning work to do besides getting his sigiht back.

I'm probably the only one who thinks that Amare's REAL problem on defense is primarly at team defense rather than individual. He's typically slow with his rotations and lacks the awareness good team defenders have. They can work with individual skills on sepcarely, but it is the team stuff I think hurts the most.
