Many years ago, the big story was Star Wars was actually a 9 part epic type thing and they started in the middle.

Now that #3 is coming, were those old stories true and we can expect 3 more to end it or is it done at 6?

Yeah - I think the original intent many, many years ago was to do all the movies. He started with the middle set in case they didn't do well. That was pretty smart. Then he complained about piracy or something and decided not to do anymore after the middle three were complete.

Now he's come back and done the first three and I for one am glad he's not going to do the last three - he's already making it a mockery.

Just with all the changes he's gone back to make "improvements" over the originals. I don't like his whole attitude towards the fanbase and the original movies, etc. I think he's down a real disservice to the franchise.

He's come right out and said that being a father to young children has influenced these films...

Jar Jar... Nuff said.

BTW: The rumors of episodes VII, VIII and IX are heating up again... Lucas had written out some outlines, etc but years ago changed his mind and limited this series to I thru VI. I guess technically he never said they would not be made...he has said that HE would not make them. Now there are allegedly talks of Spielberg being interested in making VII, VIII, and IX...and even Darabont being involved in the scripting of the films... Lucas could act as a consultant, etc but not direct. I'll post a link to some of this talk, when I find it...

From Cinecon.com:

While "Star Wars: Episode 7 - 9" will probably never happen, it does get a bit exciting every now and then when a rumor like this one pops up on the Internet.

George Lucas did pen outlines for more "Star Wars" stories but vowed to never make them. Now, Dark Horizons (http://www.darkhorizons.com) has a supposed reliable tipster who sent in the following information:

One of my pals at ILM told me a few days back that another trilogy 'might' happen. This is the sequel trilogy that Lucas said he'd never do. It's very very early days yet, but apparently there is some talk, even to the point of Mr Spielberg - who was interested in doing 'Clones' at one point - stepping in for Lucas, who may want to write, but probably won't want to direct. If Lucas doesn't they'll probably work out a deal for say Frank Darabont to pen (ala the current "Indiana Jones IV" arrangement). This one would be the three films following Return of the Jedi, Han Solo, Skywalker, post-Darth etc. How hard of a time are they going to have on their hands getting some of those original players! ha ha! finally a fitting use for CGI hey? The deal is everyone wants the sequels, except Lucas, who is apparently exhausted [Personally I'd say studio pressure]. If Spielberg directs, it could be ok. Better than those terrible prequel movies.

I think it would be great to see some movies about other characters in the same Star Wars universe.
Maybe Jedi of the past or future related to the movies or something. I don't see how they could make a new trilogy about Han, Luke, and Leia after EP VI.

The stories about them after Return of the Jedi are already out there in book form. I have read a few. Coolest Star Wars character not in the movies: Mara Jade. :D
The book trilogy about Han Solo's life before meeting Luke and Ben was kind of cool.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but George Lucas has never endorsed ANY of the novels that have come out about the Star Wars world. I seem to remember that being a big deal when Zahn's trilogy came out--that it was interesting, but Lucas had no intention whatsoever to call it the official Episodes 7, 8 and 9.

Besides, the books weren't that good anyway. :D

For what it's worth: He gave his approval to kill off Chewbacca in a recent novel...and he also has mentioned characters whom he will or won't allow to be discussed, etc. So he takes some interest in the books.

I actually enjoyed the books quite a fair bit. Granted, i read them when they first came out where there was a large dearth of good Star wars material. I actually think there's too many Star Wars books lately, it seems to dilute the universe; it's really lost its focus IMHO.

But I still think the Timothy Zahn trilogy was quite good, especially the introduction of Mara Jade and the ysalimari (sp?).

The only ones were worth reading, IMO, were the ones written by Timothy Zahn, Steve Perry, and Michael Stackpole.

I've read several interviews with sci-fi authors who've written EU books, and they all mentioned having to clear plots through LucasArts. So Lucas IS very directly involved with everything produced that says "Star Wars".

Clearing the plots has NOTHING to do with George Lucas saying, "Yeah, that's good, that's exactly how Episodes 7, 8 and 9 should be. Now I don't have to do the movies!"

To my knowledge, he has never ENDORSED a book to be an official part of his trilogies. After thinking about though, that might be wrong, because of Shadows of the Empire.

Lucas has said if he had filmed a movie between Empire and Jedi, he'd have loved to make Shadows.

I think you have a different idea of what I said Lucas did. I never said that he said, "hey that'd be good for a sequel trilogy", I just meant that he approves storylines as being in line with the direction he'd like things to go. Basically it's just protecting his property from the ass-raping that's been done to properties like Dune when others get their hands on it.

Right, so thats why I think it would be tough to make movies 7, 8, & 9 now that the books are out there and approved by Lucas Arts as part of the STAR WARS universe.

Fighting the remnant forces is not really movie worthy in the scope of Star Wars IMO.

Being based on a serial format I guess any movie they make would have to be episode 7. Maybe an old Luke and his son?
