There were 39,290 votes cast this week in the race for the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week poll.

Sultana’s Alex Gamez ended with 54.01% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.

The baseball player received 21,220 votes, beating out nine other high school athletes from across the High Desert.

To earn a spot on the ballot, Gamez helped the Sultans to a pair of victories over Oak Hills last week. Gamez went 3 for 4 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs in a 12-8 victory on April 8. Gamez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, scored a run, and pitched an inning with a strikeout in a 6-5 victory on April 10.

In the voting, Gamez beat Oak Hills’ Carsyn Leon, who received 42.47% at 16,687 total votes.

The nominees were selected based on performances between April 7 to 12.

Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.

Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week's games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.

  • How long have you been playing baseball and how did you get started: I’ve been playing baseball for 15 years. I got into baseball at a young age because my dad loves the sport so he wanted to introduce it to me.
  • What do you like most about baseball: I like when baseball games are close because it brings out a lot of emotions from everyone.
  • Do you have a pregame ritual: I don’t have a pregame ritual.
  • What’s your most memorable sports moment: Beating Chaparral High School during my sophomore year in the CIF-SS quarterfinals.
  • If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be and why: Shohei Ohtani because who wouldn’t want to be him.
  • Someone hands you $1 million, how would you spend it: I would invest that money and buy my mom a car.
  • Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world and why: I would go to Italy because it’s so beautiful there.
  • If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it: I would probably sleep because sleep is important for your body.
  • What superpower do you wish you had: Speed like The Flash.
  • Favorite sports team: Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Favorite athlete: Shohei Ohtani
  • Favorite superhero: Spider-Man
  • Favorite show: “S.W.A.T.”
  • Favorite movie: “Pearl Harbor”
