Just wondering if anyone here has any concrete info on the April 9th announcement? From what I've heard and read, it could encompass everything from the SDS renovation/replacement, the futures of Packard/Sun Angel/Karsten, the Olympic Village plan, as well as a rebranding of the athletic department and new football uniforms/logos. Specifically, Sparky "from a different angle" and a black alternate or regular uniform.

Personally, my favorite ASU uniforms are the most traditional of the baseball combinations--and the baseball logo is my favorite as well--so needless to say I'm nervous. Black I don't get: it doesn't work with the current color scheme if they're keeping maroon and gold (look at the band), and frankly, it always seemed like home field advantage in early season and day games could be better accomplished by wearing white at home. I'd also be disappointed if a new SDS is built in another location. I love the setting betwen the buttes.

But all of the above is just word-of-mouth and message board fodder I've seen. Nothing official.

Im just as curious as you. There is a 10 page thread on devilsdigest.com about it and no real concrete evidence. Something has gotta leak!!!

If they do this they'll look like Oregon South.

No, they will still look like ASU. Besides, if it helps get recruits I dont care what they wear as long as they dont take away the maroon and gold. Hopefully the admin didnt get a good deal on some different colors at a surplus store.

Nobody goes to a school including Oregon because of uniforms.

Location, relationships, and playing time in that order.

Maybe it's part of that uniform "deal" they cut with Jahii Carson to get him to honor his verbal.

I know you are all knowing and all Mao, but when was the last time you were a 17 year old kid? Also, if location is key then why do people go to Ua.

When was the last time you were? Oh yeah, you're allegiance tells me you're about as educated as most 17 year olds. Sorry.

Nobody goes anywhere because they update uniforms. It's a minor perk which means nothing in the bigger scheme of things. The best teams in college every year are Alabama, OKlahoma, Texas, USC, etc. who haven't changed uniforms in decades. Whereas programs like the aforementioned Arizona have changed uniforms into an Oregon-esque design where they can offer hundreds of different options but we're going nowhere fast.

Truth is no parent or advisor allows any sort of decent prospect to play somewhere because the kid thinks the uniforms look sick. Just like no parent or counselor would let a 4.0 student with a scholarship to Harvard go to San Diego State or UNLV because they like the colors.

And since you're asking, kids go to UA because they're local or California kids who want to play in the Pac10 within driving distance from home or they're from Texas/elsewhere and UA has an assistant with deep roots to those local high schools. Same reason prospects go to ASU except change up Texas with Florida and Denver.

I just hope that they realize that gimmicks are the mark of a second-rate organization. Oregon is an exception to the rule because of Nike. But I guess I should reserve judgment until I see what they unveil.

Facilities and the chance to be seen by scouts and a televised audience are what will win recruiting battles for ASU. But the school also needs to maintain ties to boosters, alumni, and ticket-buyers. Tradition is important: I chose the school I did because when I visited, I could picture myself there more strongly than others. A confused identity doesn't help anyone.

^New video about the anouncement. Sounds like ASU is trying to get out ahead of people complaining about the changes. Specifically they seem to focus on how the helmets have changed over the years. I really hope they don't ditch the Gold helmets w/ Sparky poking the players in the ear, they're so unique and awesome. Ditching them in favor of some FSU inspired helmet with a pitchfork would really be a lot less unique.

Pitchfork will be on the helmet, get ready for an all black uni, SDS will be torn down and rebuilt on the same spot, Karsten will be moved to Papago in favor of the Olympic Village, Packard Stadium will be torn down and relocated. Get ready boys, BIG stuff is coming to Sun Devil Land and I am STOKED.

Unfortunately no. From what I have heard they are going to rent certain parts of university owned land and have a "university tax district" type of thing. Rural between university and the 202 as we currently know it wont be the same in 5 years. You can believe what I say or not as some of it I still dont believe, 6 more days and we should know for sure.

You're right, of course, but it's not about the final sales pitch, it's about first impressions. ASU wants gear that's attractive to teens so they might actually wear it and sell the brand to their friends. Maroon and gold is a pretty hard sell to kids right now, and Sparky's just never been cool outside of Tempe.

I've preached for years that winning doesn't recruit, winning just gets you into doors you couldn't otherwise get into. Well, in this day and age, marketing and apparel can get you into a few more doors, too. Still have to do the recruiting work, but it can be a minor advantage if your program is forward thinking and has the right connection (Nike).

get ready for an all black uni

Thats the way to get the kids in 2011, really embrace those trends from 1998. Lets hope we continue this line of thinking and play Will Smiths "Getting Jiggy with it" as the team runs onto the field.

We students love the idea of black uniforms so I imagine the athletes would be thinking the same. And they are coming soon.

USC doesn't seem to have a problem with a very similar color combination. I suppose they have history on their side, but then, they pay respect TO their history. That video HooverDam posted is such an unbelievable hard sell. Yuck. I feel dumber just having watched it. Disrespecting the sunburst logo by directly linking it to bad fashion is sad. Especially since I feel like we're about to see some bad fashion.

I guess I don't speak for the current students, and I'm not an alum. But I guess when I see the crowds at storied programs (and some not-so-storied) wearing the same colors over generations, I think it's cool.

I'll say this... does anyone remember Georgia's black uniform when they played Alabama a couple years ago?

I remember it being one of the most electricfying atmosperes I had ever witness, the sound was defening and the "new" black uniforms were a buzz

Ofcourse it did little for them when they actually started playing, but I believe new uniforms can add a certain swagger, if only for a short while...

I am all about change, especially if that somehow included a new stadium, but in all honesty, I am not holding my breathe, new uni's, maybe, anything else I would be SHOCKED..

There WILL be a new stadium, most likely within the next five years, but they haven't got past the who, what, when, where, and how.

I've heard ASU's going to play in Chase Field once this year to highlight its downtown campus.

Thats interesting, I hadn't heard about that. I know the thought was to play in Chase while a new SDS is being built.

I wonder which game they'd move to Chase. You'd have to think it would be a game they expect to have lower attendance. The UC Davis game might be a wise choice since it'll still be hot that time of year they could close the roof an have the AC on.

Though I'm not sure how that would work out w/ the D'backs. Im sure they'd prefer to limit the tearing up of their field until after their season. Additionally they have a home game the night before and it might be tricky to turn the place around in a day.

My opinion: save the money, get better coaches.

They Olympic Village thing makes little sense. Stanford has been sub-par in the only sports that matter whenever they have not had Monty or Harbaugh, both of whom were happy to leave once they got a bigger paycheck. The non-revenue sports become dead weight when a school stresses them.

From what I have heard this is true ONLY if SDS is getting razzed. It makes sense, still charge for parking on campus and ride the light rail for free.

They're going to need to close the roof and crank the AC if everyone's wearing black...

Been talking with my friends and we think that rumor's not quite right. Don't think they could move a game this year with the way seating works. It would have to be next year at the earleist.

From what I have heard it will be next year. Lgistics dont work out for this year and it would have to be a demo that starts right after the end of the season.
