I'm very interested in what you think of this...as I watch Kao Misi of Utah and his combination of range, speed, aggressiveness, and tackling ability, could he be a natural fit at WILB? I prefer size (6-3, 244) to Weatherspoon's (6-1, 241)...makes me wonder if we can draft him at #58 and use the #26 pick on a CB (McCourty) or NT (Williams/Cody) or DE (Dunlap/Griffen/Pierre-Paul).

I haven't seen Misi play, but luv everything about Weatherspoon's game. I suspect that if he's still on the board at #26... the Cards will take all of a nanosecond to get his name in.

I like Misi but i think we could trade back into the 2nd and get him but Misi is a sack machine and a natural OLB moving him to WILB would be a mistake IMO if he goes anywhere besides OLB its DE. We could draft Weatherspoon in the 1st and play him at WILB and trade up to get Misi in the early second.

Mitch me and Jeff have brought up Whitehurst as maybe an option as QB since he only has a 3rd round tender, i have heard nothing but good things what are your thoughts?

EDIT: Wont be there at 58 but a trade up could be an option

I appreciate your thoughts on Misi, azcardsfan. To me he looks like Dansby II only a better tackler. Dansby was an OLB to start with, as we all know.

As for Whitehurst, I always felt frustrated watching him in college...he had all this talent and so much talent around him and he just kept falling short time after time in big games. Maybe he's a changed player by now having watched Philip Rivers...Whitehurst has the arm, does he have the toughness and head?

You know, Sydney, I like Weatherspoon too and I love his attitude. And we need attitude on this defense.

Is there any slim, minute, or infinitesmal chance that McClain falls to us? Ohpleasepleaseplease!!!! :D

Now that Miami is out of the picture, Stout, who knows?

Teams don't tend to draft inside LBers in the first round...and hey, apparently the Dolphins were not all that enamored with him to the extent of paying $22M in guarantees for a player who has never gotten even a sniff of the Pro Bowl.

Could we really get that lucky 2 years in a row? Beanie then McClain. Wow if that happens there's no way that this team doesn't win a Super Bowl before I die. I might run across the UoP naked this year if it does:D

BTW Mitch, good stuff my man

Good thread Mitch. What is it you are seeing on tape that you like about Weatherspoon? I want to like this kid so bad because I LOVE his attitude. He also demonstrated superb physical attributes at the combine/personal workouts.

However, when I watch tape on him he seems really slow to diagnose plays, bites on fakes, and runs around blocks. I honestly want to like this kid so badly because our defense needs someone with his attitude at linebacker, but the tape simply isn't letting me. For example, go back and watch the senior bowl and look how much faster Washington is to diagnose plays (they play together almost the whole game.)

I really like what I see in Washington and wonder what Lott could do for him (he is really skinny even for a WILB).

I have a few other thought that I'll post later...

Well with Weatherspoon you have to bank on his work ethic making him get better because like you said, he has some issues. He can be over aggressive and take false steps because of slow diagnosing. In the NFL his study habits should take care of his diagnosing issues because he will get more film time than he had in school. What i really like is his leadership, his athleticism, and his physicality. When I have seen Weatherspoon, he always seems to play at a very high level and moves very quickly. He plays down hill which would be a nice change. His passion is infectious, and I believe that it is what this team really needs. The rest I think is workable at the pro level.

See, I think that Misi projects better at the SILB than at WILB. His experience at DE would shorten his development at taking on guards which, unlike many linebackers coming out of college, he wouldn't shy away from. His size and strength would really distinguish him from other SILB in the league and give us even more athleticism up the middle. Not to mention his experience at DE would give us more depth at the DE position in nickel packages.

Normally I wouldn't suggest this sort of position change for a guy, but in the Senior Bowl he looked natural in the middle. At OLB, I think Misi might be pretty average, but inside I think he can be a standout.
