For the entertainment and morale of all, I suggest reminiscing about past Suns teams that did show more fight than the 2024-25 team. I can think of several right away--
One is the 2013-14 team. I consider it the ultimate "lovable loser" team in Suns history. I suspect Suns management did not fully believe in it or take it seriously; yet only injuries kept it out of the playoffs. Damn it, that team would surely have made it in had Dragon or Bledsoe missed one or two fewer games. I was inspired by it and proud to root for it, just like I am ashamed and embarrassed at the 2024-25 team.
Another is the 1996-97 team, the first post-Barkley Suns team. Enmeshed in roster chaos (represented by the infamous Robert Horry throwing a towel in his coach's face), the team fell to a horrifying 0-13 record. Yet it somehow made the playoffs with a record of, I think, 44-38.
And how about the 2002-03 team, which lost in the first round but gave the Spurs a fight? The end of game 4--Penny Hardaway inbounding to Jake Voskuhl for a successful shot under the basket--had my mom and me jumping and hugging each other. No such thing ever happened this season.
And of course no one will forget the most never-give-up team in Suns history, the 1992-93 team. Phil Jackson noted how the Bulls had to win "the hard way" against it. It's the season that proves how much heart Charles Barkley had and how he was the leader that Devin Booker isn't.
Or the 1976 Finals team. The only reason you wouldn't know much about that team was if you're too young. I was, having been born in 1980. But I was so intrigued by that team's legend that years ago, I went to the rare books room at the Phoenix main library to read their non-circulating copy of The Little Team That Could, and took notes on it. It makes me want to call 2024-25 The Huge Team That Couldn't.
