Playing in front of the home crowd has been instrumental to the success of both the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz. The Suns managed to secure home-court advantage for a first-round playoff series with an emphatic victory last time out. The Jazz can do the same with a win in Wednesday’s regular-season finale against visiting Phoenix, but they might have to play without Carlos Boozer(notes).
With a 123-101 victory over Denver on Tuesday, the Suns (53-28) are assured of finishing no lower than fourth in the Western Conference.

“It’s a reward for the collective energy we’ve put into it this season,” Steve Nash(notes) said, “… We enjoy this and we want to keep getting better and see how good we can be.”
Phoenix easily defeated a Nuggets team trying to wrap up the Northwest Division title, jumping out to an 18-2 advantage just minutes into the game and leading by as many as 28 points in the second half before resting its starters the final period. Nash had 18 points and 10 assists and Amare Stoudemire finished with 26 points and eight rebounds for Phoenix, which has won 12 of 14.
Opening a first-round series at home seems to be crucial for the Suns, as they’ve reeled off eight consecutive wins at US Airways Center, and are 14-2 there since the All-Star break.
Although Phoenix has locked up a top-four finish, it can still move up and clinch the No. 3 seed with a win over Utah. The Suns won the last meeting between these teams 110-100 on March 19, behind Stoudemire’s 44 points on 14 of 16 shooting.
Boozer had 23 points and 16 rebounds in that game, but he might miss the regular-season finale after straining his right ribcage in Tuesday’s 103-94 win at Golden State.
Boozer was taken to the locker room for X-rays at the start of the second quarter and didn’t return. He declined to comment as he slowly left the locker room, but gave a statement to the team.
“I’ve got a sharp pain in my right side under my ribcage,” he said. “I will have an MRI (Wednesday) to see what it is. It happened at the end of the first quarter. I didn’t get hit. It just happened.”
With Boozer unable to play Tuesday, Paul Millsap(notes) stepped up and finished with 10 points and a career-best 24 rebounds. Mehmet Okur(notes) had a game-high 23 points for Utah, which improved to 11-4 since March 15.
Like the Suns, the Jazz (53-28) can also get the third seed with a win in the finale, which would give them the Northwest title. Utah can also vault all the way to second place in the West with a win over the Suns, coupled with a Dallas home loss to San Antonio.
“We’re going to see who’s the tougher team,” Utah’s Ronnie Price(notes) said. “The good thing is it’s in our building. We’ll see who’s tougher. It would be a good momentum swing for us going into the playoffs. This is going to be a big test for us.”
While a victory would seem to give the Jazz a great boost of confidence heading into the playoffs, a loss to Phoenix would mean the Nuggets would win the division and Utah would be regulated to the fifth seed.
The Jazz don’t want to think about falling to fifth, because home court is so important to their success.
They’ve won 10 straight in Salt Lake City, and are a league-best 20-2 at home since Jan. 6.
The Suns are fully aware of how difficult it is to win in Utah, as they’ve lost four straight there and six of seven. In the lone meeting in Salt Lake City this season, the Jazz won 124-115 on Jan. 25 behind Boozer’s 21 points and 20 rebounds.

Not necessarily. If Portland loses to Golden State and SA wins against Dallas, and we win, we would play SA.

I think I wouldn't mind facing the Nuggets this year. We own them and they can't stop us. Of course Carmello could just go on a tear and beat us , something Portland may be lacking. It's a tossup. Whatever the scenario is, I hope we don't end up facing San Antonio.

we have 2 defenders who are very smart that can guard melo.
hill and dudley, they proved it last night...although melo's score was still up there.
they do other intangibles than stop him from scoring.

i like our chances against the volatile nuggets. kmart lost his cool(and is still coming back from knee problems), no one else is a scorer except melo and billups against us. amare owns nene. whats really cool is that we seem to make "the bird man" ineffective against us due to our own hustle players like lou.

im still up in the air about the blazers, they are long and athletic. without lopez our lack of height gets a bit exposed. also for some reason the refs let em play physical with us. and now they have camby who grabs a lot of boards, something we are inconsistent at. and miller is a tough match up for our starting pg as well, something we know teams will attack.

i'd take in the 1st round, in this order: nuggz, blazers, spurs, and jazz.

Give me the beat up Blazers and avoid the Lakers for as long as possible. That's a DREAM scenario IMO folks.

I am aware of that. I am also aware that I have a better chance of winning the Powerball tonight than this occurring :D

I think its very easy for SA to be the 6 seed, they will beat Dallas IMO they have been playing well and Dallas is soft. And don't look past a GS team that can score in bunches against a Portland team without their best player! Hopefully the Suns know before or during the game what would happen if we win or lose so we could make the right decision. I want nothing to do with the Spurs come playoff time, we know how they get the calls in the playoffs!

Yep. I don't care what anyone says about how teams are playing right now. If the Suns and Lakers meet without Lopez the Lakers are going to destroy the Suns. Amare will put up massive numbers but it won't really matter.

Also I'm all in favor in making that pick the Suns sent the Thunder one slot worse.

agreed on all counts.

how the idea of tanking this game is even something the Suns have considered or Coro has written about is mind-boggling to me. There is ONE team in the West who will absolutely pound us... that's the Lakers and getting the 4 seed means for intent and purposes we have HCA in one round MAX. Get the win, get a banged to hell Blazer club, stay away from the Lakers and hope someone KO's them ala the Mavs did SA for us back 2006. Always get the higher seed. Always.

I think the Jazz would have a decent chance of knocking off the Lakers in rd2 if Bynum isn't playing effectively. Deron Williams will crush whatever PG the Lakers use and they have bigs able to clean the glass and score.

Really if the Suns win tonight I don't see any team other than the Lakers beating them because the only other team they wouldn't have HCA over is the Mavs and I don't think it'd matter in that series.

If we are only satified with getting out of the 1st round then playing the Nuggets would be ideal. We own them. There is no way they can beat us 4 out of 7 with 4 games in Phoenix. No one can guard Amare and they are weak on the boards. We might even sweep although winning in 5 is more likely.

If we are talking about a long playoff run then I think we want the 3rd seed and Portland in round 1. Portland scares me because they are the anti-Nuggets. They are long and dominant on the boards. Even without Roy they have playmakers that can hurt us and they will grind it out. Every game will be relatively close and played close to 100 points each or below. That being said, without Roy I think we beat them in 6-7 games.

Round 2 is where the 3 seed really makes a difference. The Mavs don't scare me and if SA were to win we would have home court. I think we have at least a 50-50 chance against either of those teams, even better if Lopez can come back and be productive.

Just getting to the WC Finals would be sweet but I think we would have a decent chance if A) We have Lopez back and he has gotten some games under his belt in Round 2 or B) Someone knocks off the Lakers before this point. If we play the Lakers in WC Finals and they have Bynum and we don't have Lopez then I think we lose in a short series.

Still lots to decide tonight.

Utah will be playing without Kirilenko and most likely without Okur and Boozer. I was thinking the Jazz have a lot more to play for than the Suns at this point, but if Utah is without these players the Suns should take this game easily. The last thing we need is to lose confidence by losing to a team without three key players.

With the 3rd seed we are most likely to play the Blazers, but it is not a certainty that Roy will be out in that series. The Spurs are healthy and I wouldn't want to play them simply because Lopez will be out and they would get to face us, yet again, missing a key player. I'd just once like to play the Spurs at full strength. So I hope Dallas or Blazers can win tonight. But no matter what, I hope the Suns go for the win to enter the playoffs on a good note. No need to lose to Utah twice in a row and three times this season. Plus, if we win, should we meet Utah later in the playoffs, we would have home-court.

Where did you hear Okur is going to be out? I heard about Boozer's injury, but Okur also? This is a must-win that is getting easier--hope we don't take them too lightly.
