Both the Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs can now rest easy knowing they'll be returning to the upcoming Western Conference playoffs.
With plenty to play for in the final few regular season games, however, neither team can truly rest.
The Spurs will be chasing the West's top seed while the Suns jockey for home-court advantage in the first round when the teams meet in San Antonio Wednesday, with Phoenix seeking its first season-series victory in five years.
San Antonio has won nine of its last 10 games, and seems unwilling to ease up entering the season's final week. The Spurs (53-24) are just one game behind New Orleans for first place in the West, but just 1 1/2 games ahead of the Suns (52-26), who are in sixth.
"In past seasons with five games to go, you knew you could be first, second, third or even fourth, and that's it. This year it could be seventh, so it puts pressure on everybody," San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili said. "We can't slow down, we have to keep playing."
The Spurs, who've won five straight and 12 of 13 at home, rebounded from a dismal offensive effort with a 72-65 win at Portland on Sunday. In its previous game, San Antonio had lost 90-64 to Utah, meaning its two lowest point totals of the season came in the last two games.
But the team's signature defense seems to be tightening just as the playoffs approach. The Spurs have held their last 11 opponents under 100 points, with those teams averaging just 86.1 points and shooting 40.7 percent from the field.
The Suns again feature an uptempo style, even since the acquisition of center Shaquille O'Neal.
O'Neal was scratched Tuesday due to a hip contusion, but Amare Stoudemire had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead seven scorers in double figures as Phoenix won 127-113 at Memphis to clinch a playoff berth.
"We wanted to win it from the inside, and, without Shaq, we were undermanned in the interior," Stoudemire said. "I just tried to attack in many ways. Just try to keep them off-balance a little bit."
The Suns had lost two of three before Tuesday's win, but they've still won 12 of their last 16 -- averaging 114.5 points over that span -- as O'Neal has grown more comfortable. The center, who is expected to return for Wednesday's game, is averaging 12.6 points and 10.6 rebounds in 24 games since coming to Phoenix in a trade from Miami.
The hot streak has left Phoenix just 2 1/2 games from the top of the West, tied with Utah a half-game behind Houston for the last home-court spot in the first round.
"We are working against the conference standings right now," Stoudemire said after the win over the Grizzlies. "We are still improving as a team, and this was a good game for us. It was also an important game."
Since taking three of four against San Antonio during the 2002-03 season, Phoenix had won just three of its last 14 games against the Spurs entering 2007-08.
But the Suns have won two of the first three in the series this season, including a 100-95 win at San Antonio in December and a 94-87 win exactly one month ago.

I think DA should sit some of the guys(shaq, hill), just like pop does at the end of the season, to prevent competitors from getting a good look at them. Skinner and DJ should play more shaq and Hill should rest. The suns playoff seedling is probably better facing the lakers or spurs than the jazz anyway. The Jazz are playing very well, thumping both spurs and hornets recently. Okur is shooting very well, and they are defending with alot of energy. Right now utah looks to be peaking at the right time. The lakers and spurs are not as consistent in recent games. The hornets may be the suns kryptonite, but the Jazz are the hornets kryptonite. Frankly I'd rather the suns face the lakers or spurs in the first round.

so would i, but id like to pass the lakers, who aren't playing so great, so we can win the division title AND have home court.

Depending on the amount of Ginoflops and Passion of the Bruce's miracles, we might win this game.

This feels like a main event matchup--just like last month's Suns/Spurs game. If Phoenix wins this I will be ecstatic.

The way we're playing, sitting guys is the WRONG thing to do in this game. The only reason I was ok with Shaq sitting last night was because we were playing the Grizzlies. But we better not concede any games from here on out.

I 100% agree. If we were playing any of the teams next to us in the standings Shaq plays last night. I think they were trying to save him for this game. Let's hope it works.

If the Suns are still trying to gel as a team, its no time to rest, rest when the season's over.

It's too late to rest players. The hard transition in February cost us 'rest' time. Besides, there is still a chance to catch the Lakers and win the crown. That means a lot to me as a Suns' fan. I was glad to see Shaq resting, but not thrilled. I hat to see anything upset the rhythm the Suns have had recently.

All things being equal - I would rest Leandro Barbosa for a few weeks. Bring him back mid June.

I don't see Phoenix winning this game. Back to back in San Antonio - that's as hard as it gets.

I'd be completely thrilled to see the Suns winning but have to predict the following

Spurs 102
Suns 89
Amaré (27)

I don't like the feel of this game after that damn Dallas loss. But really I think we just lost that game because Steve's back tightened up and he could not hit anything.

I think we're the better, more complete team with the big Shaqtus so I think we'll win. Gotta keep Parker and Floppy in check tho.

Resting players this time of year is what championship teams do. Teams that push for every late season game end up like last years mavericks, burned out.

Amare has averaged only 16.3 ppg (47% fg) against the Spurs this season (3 games) and has failed to score more than 17 points in any of the three meetings. Last time Amare was held to fewer than 22 points was against the Spurs 15 games ago. He has averaged around 29 ppg since then. It will be interesting to see which trend will continue.

The spurs use amares predictability against him. They bring a double after he puts the ball on the floor and the third defender, TD, is waiting in the lane area for amare to try the finish. Amare rarely shoots a pull up jumper after starting off with an aggressive move. Hopefully amare will learn that being predictable is a grevious error against the better teams. Sometimes I wonder whether amare watches the film and sees what they are doing to him. Diaw is also predictable in a different way. If Diaw drives into the lane area, he is very likely to pass out to the wing against any team with an inside presence, he never trys to draw the foul on the finish. His predictability makes it much easier to defend him.

heh, i thought i was the only one who sees this. funny thing is that shaq does the same thing in defense, and look how much better the interior d is. amare's game has matured dramatically since his rookie year but still there are obvious holes in his game (dependent on nash maybe?). jeez, imagine how much more dominant he can be if he could work on his weaknesses (he's already mvp caliber as it is)

^ Crazy talk, if Nash scores 34 Suns win easily. I think Nash needs to be over 20 for a Suns win. And Amare needs 25-30.

Suns 105
Spurs 100
