YahooThe Los Angeles Clippers don’t need to be reminded that the Phoenix Suns are not the team they want to face while trying to end their longest losing streak of the season.
The surging Suns look to continue their recent dominance over the short-handed Clippers, and hand them their 11th consecutive loss overall when they meet on Sunday night at Staples Center.
Phoenix (20-13) will try for its fifth win in six games over Los Angeles after beating the Clippers 106-98 at home on Jan. 2. The Suns only loss in the last five of the series was 97-90 at Staples last January.
Still likely to be without stars Baron Davis (bruised tailbone), Zach Randolph (left knee) and Chris Kaman (foot) for this contest, the Clippers (8-22) won’t have an easy time trying for their second consecutive home win over the Suns. All three didn’t not play versus Phoenix this month and remain day-to-day.
Los Angeles looks to avoid its longest losing streak since dropping 13 in a row from March 17-April 11, 2004.
Davis, averaging 17.3 points per game, has yet to play in 2009, while Randolph (22.0 ppg) has missed eight in row and Kaman hasn’t played since November.
With seven players notching more than 20 minutes, Los Angeles fell 107-80 at New Orleans on Friday. Eric Gordon and Mardy Collins each scored 15 while Marcus Camby added 13 and 17 rebounds for the Clippers, who are averaging 86.9 points during their 10-game skid.
“We had good effort but we’re playing with seven or eight guys,” Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said.
Gordon is averaging 12.3 points this season, but 23.6 in his last seven games. The rookie guard had 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting against Phoenix earlier in the month.
Shaquille O’Neal had 17 points and nine rebounds in that contest, a modest night for the veteran center considering his play of late. O’Neal is averaging 23.4 points and 11.2 boards over his last five games. He had 25 with 10 rebounds and went a stunning 7-for-7 from the free-throw line in Phoenix’s 128-100 rout of Dallas on Friday.
The Suns shot 63 percent while scoring their most points in a game this season. Phoenix also improved to 9-4 after losing a season-high four in a row from Nov. 28-Dec. 4.
“Consistency wins games, consistency wins championships,” O’Neal told the Suns’ official Web site.
Jason Richardson added 21 points and Leandro Barbosa had 20 for the Suns, who set a season high by scoring 40 in the third quarter, while holding the Mavericks to 19.
“Everyone was involved, playing defense and running,” O’Neal said. “If we can package that and become consistent in playing that way, then we’ll be on our way.”
Amare Stoudemire added 16 against Dallas for the Suns’ fourth victory in five games. He had 23 this month against Los Angeles, and is averaging 25.3 points on 62 percent shooting in his last seven games versus the Clippers.
Phoenix is looking for its third consecutive road win after losing four in a row away from home.
