No...the blame goes on the front line. No effort on the boards and too many 2nd chance points. Erase 10 of those unnecessary points and we win this game.
Amundson is one of our best rebounders, so why did he play only 5 minutes tonight?
As said, I blame this on Gentry and bad defense, particular by Nash late in the game.
We haven't played very well since the last time we played the Hornets, always having to come back and win the 4th quarter. Not tonight. Rebounding, which was supposed to be our biggest problem this season, wasn't an issue until tonight when it killed us. Amare had as many turnovers in this game as rebounds, finishing with 5 in 43 minutes. Frye did his part with 10 boards in only 28 minutes. Hill had 6 in 34. JRich could have grabbed a few more, finishing with 4. Dudley had 5 in 28 minutes. But it's not just the offensive rebounds we gave up. So many loose ball fouls.
Amundson is one of our best rebounders, so why did he play only 5 minutes tonight?
We took too many outside shots again, and missed too many. But Gentry keeps telling Frye to keep shooting, so that's how you get those 4-15 games, 1-7 from beyond the arc.
Even with the bad losses to Orlando and LA, this is EASILY the worst loss of the season, and probably the worst loss we've had since early last season.
This is a team we should not have lost to. There is NO excuse for the rebounding problem. Even a mediocre rebounding team like us shouldn't have had that big of a problem against such a small team.
Gentry tried to get the guys to buy into the idea that we actually needed rebounds, just nobody decided to do anything about it. Pathetic and embarassing.
No, it was the +12 off rebound differential that killed them.
Gentry takes some of the blame, like anybody else.
Our biggest problem wasn't Frye chucking up bad shots, our biggest trouble was REBOUNDING. And Gentry needs to tell his guys that they need to concentrate on that--which he DID. The players have to be held accountable for giving up so many rebounds. Blame the coach if you want, but he wasn't the one not boxing Okafor out.
But he was the one who could have put in Amundson or Collins for better defensive rebound and better defense on Okafor who was at times like the Dream down low. The cost of playing Frye too long is doubled. And it's kind of too cocky to insist on winning with "what the other team gives us".
Blame goes to Gentry for not recognizing the bad combination of relying on Frye on both sides of the court and give Collins more time to take out Okafor. Or have Amare on Okafor earlier. Or feed Amare to stabilize the offense more consistently. The offense dictated our offense when Nash dribbled the ball and channelled the shots to Frye and won the gamble while we went along.
I thought the schemes and matches were fine. The problem was that there were three Hornets to one Sun under the basket on misses, both on offense and defense. It seemed like the only rebounds we were getting were the ones that bounced out of reach of a Hornet.
As I stated earlier, we give up at least eight less 2nd chance points, we win the game. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the back breaker of the evening.
somehow our energy level was low in this game, maybe due to taking the Hornets for granted. Neither JRich on Brown nor Hill on Peja did good job. And when defense gets chaotic a bit, JRich, Amare went back to their old habit of standing aimlessly watching. Nash's early defense was OK but had the same lapses that cost us the game. Still, I hoped Gentry could recognize this and change the whole pace and thing a little better with substitutions. well.
