Although the Suns are on the brink of being eliminated from the playoffs, Phoenix intends to make a multiyear contract offer to point guard Steve Nash this offseason.
The hope is that he will accept and not become part of the vaunted 2010 free-agent class, according to ESPN.com.
"All I can say right now is that I look forward to that conversation," Nash said in the report.
Nash is averaging 15.9 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Suns, who are in the No. 9 spot in the West with a 42-35 record after Sunday's 24-point loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Now THAT is a sound business decision. How is this team not in the Finals every year, I'll never know

I guess they don't see that Steve Nash is their major defensive problem.

Steve Kerr folding... this would be a true disaster... They need to rebuild, not extend a 35 year old PG whose style is the contrary of what Kerr tried to accomplish.

I guess Sarver felt threatened by Shaqs comments "u can either win or save money, but not both" He doesnt want to look as a irresponsible money saving owner so he keeps everyone around although he knows he wont get a championship with this squad.

If I knew how to do one of those vomit smilies it would come into play right now. If this is anything more than setting up a potential deal by making him look "hard to get" then I will be irate. I love Steve don't get me wrong, but this team HAS to head a different direction.

I didn't realize that Nash was such a beast on the boards this year.

If the financial terms werent disclosed, why is everyone coming to conclusions?

They might offer him something way less than what he can get from the Knicks (or someone else), just so Kerr can say that "he tried" to keep him in Phoenix.

OR

...They could just be trying to keep him. Not very many teams let their 2XMVP go, even if the play is declined.

There is no reason to find a better one when you desperately need to rebuild, you trade him and get something to help your rebuilding process, such as a draftpick.

Slin you don know you just can't trade everyone for draft picks right? Trades have to line up financially we can't just trade everyone for draft picks.

Wow that is news to me!!

There are more than enough contracts around to make trades work, it's a non-issue.
You can easily trade Nash with his expiring contract for 1-2 players with 2 year contracts making less money than Nash but within the margin to pass the rules and a draft pick.

Making trades work financially is the lesser problem, finding someone who is interested to give up what you want is the bigger problem.

Say Nash for Eddy Curry, 3M$ and #7. Curry makes less than Nash, even if they can't buy him out it works out well for the Suns financially in the long term because the #7 pick would be on a rookie contract for 3 or 4 years.

This is a huge mistake IMO. Unless you plan on handing over the reigns to another PG and have Steve come off the bench. You can't have a 35+ year old PG (who can't play a lick of defense) leading your team.

The only other option would be to make this team the deepest defensive team on the planet to surround Steve. We all know that is not going to happen.

Let's hope they are signing up Steve to hand over the reigns and not actually delusional to think someone like Steve can lead this team to a title before he retires or moves on from this next contract.

I agree. The only way I'd want Nash re-signed is either for trade purpose or as a back-up for vet-min.

I'd like to keep him for next season. Let him play out his deal, and then go from there. Only way I get rid of Nash is if another team offers something that we can't refuse. If not, keep him and let his deal come off the books.

His defense will always be a problem, but I'm pretty sure you all will miss him after he's gone.

He had a down year this year, but after Porter left, he pretty much has become the Nash we have known for 5 years now.

Wouldn't it make sense to keep MVSteve? I mean really, the dude's defensive IQ is poor, but that has always been known.

Who in the league could run this offense better? Steve is a Sun...

It is time to change the offense.

Exactly, eventhough it will take time and that's why the Suns need to accept rebuilding because obviously they aren't ready to accept that there will be growing pains which is why they fired Porter and tried to save the season with Gentry and our old style.

Plus that Nash can't play efficiently in a slower pace.
