Suns fans sure set the bar high. :doi: Pin our hopes in the post on a skinny 7-footer who recognizes he's not a good offensive option. Passive and timid. He needs to be a little more selfish.

Is that really the criteria for a player winning a starting role and helping lead the Suns to the next step?

On the current roster? For a 19 year-old kid? Absolutely! Also, nobody in their right mind claims that Bender will LEAD the Suns to the next level.
I have become a huge fan of bender this year, but anyone who thinks he will LEAD the Suns to the next level is delusional.

He isn't passing up opportunities because it was the better option. He is passing up good opportunities because he is passive and timid. He needs to learn that it is okay to force things every once in a while even if it leads to a miss or turnover. He needs to be a little more selfish and that will lead to being more aggressive and will in turn lead to more positive results.

I agree, but telling him to shoot X times a game is the wrong way to go about that. I suggested being aggressive with his moves away from the ball and under the glass. Those are ways that you can train yourself to be aggressive without developing bad habits.

I think people are looking at Bender's upside not necessarily where he will lead the team. It's not wrong to hope for the best from a #4 pick just a year ago. Teams need players to fill all roles. Bender has only played with a real PG for 3 games so far this year. I think we'll see more from him in the future but if he can be a complimentary piece to Booker and to a lesser extent Warren, taking pressure off them by scoring when he can, that will help everyone.

We need to take what we can get from him through the remainder of the year because there aren't any other options as far as PF's go for the Suns right now with the trade deadline being behind us and since they're not competing for the players I don't see many players who get bought out looking to catch on with them.

I've never advocated telling him to shoot a certain amount of shots, but I think they do need to continue to tell him to be more aggressive.
