Suns looking to make a trade?

BONUS SHOTS: The Suns are working the phones and taking calls as Thursday’s 1 p.m. (Arizona time) trading deadline looms. One thing is for certain: The Suns won’t take on any more payroll, which wipes out the chance of adding a player for draft choices or future considerations.

One big question is if Marcus Banks’ increased playing time — and improved play in spots — has attracted any teams that are looking for a possible starter. The Suns seem inclined to keep their top seven players intact, leaving Banks and James Jones as the possible bargaining chips in order to bring in someone who can help right away.

I have my doubts that a trade will get done, but we'll see. Clevaland is one team that is looking for help at the point, but do the Cavs have anything that the Suns would want in return for Banks.

I like Marshall, and I actually wonder what Drew Gooden. He makes a little over 6 million a year, and I wonder if they would be interested in trading him. He's pretty solid on the boards and I think he'd be able to run a bit too.

I've mentioned it before, but Banks for Wesley and Pollard makes sense for both teams. The Cavs would get an upgrade over Eric Snow, the Suns would get an emergency fourth guard in Wesley, whose contract expires after next season, plus Pollard, whose contract expires this year.

the cavs would have to be nuts. jones and banks are waaaaaay too inconsistent. and doesn't gooden start for them? i just can't see it happening. i like the idea of donyell marshall however.

No way. Everyone has always known that Rodman is quite intelligent. "Crazy" and "headcase" are a lot easier to take when the guy is actually smart.

Hes finally hitting his shots, and his defense has always been very good.

We need another bigman but i wouldnt trade any of our top 7 at this point in the season.

D'Antoni needs to feel around on who'd be interested in Banks/Jumaine Jones and one or two of our 1st rounders.

I don't necessarily want to trade James Jones but he isn't a key piece of this team right now. Amare, Nash, Bell, Marion, Diaw, KT, Barbosa, at best James is 8th in the rotation.

But Nazr would be in the top 7 in the rotation too. I would rather have a solid back up forward on this team then a 4th or 5th guard.

To preface, I'd say that the Nazr speculation on this board is the best and most realistic trade for both teams.

However, I can't ignore that Detroit just wouldn't want to trade Nazr Mohammed to us when there may be a better than average chance that we would meet in the NBA Finals.

It is hard to see how the Suns can work a deal that will make much of a difference. Right now their main problem is health and the fact that the team is terribly dependent on Nash. But other than Kidd, I can't see any PG who could run the Suns offense and even Kidd might struggle.

Ideally, the Suns would find a big man who can play tough defense, rebound, block shots, and score... but no team in their right mind trades that kind of guy.

I keep looking. Getting someone like Steven Hunter who is only used for special situations might make short term sense, but his contract make him unattractive long run. Most of the rest of the available bigs can't run well enough to get playing time.

If the Suns can keep a healthy roster, I think their most immediate need is at the 1-3 position. As much as I want another big man I think the Suns are most vulnerable at the SG position. I keep remembering what happened when Raja got injured in the playoffs last season. The Suns could use another swing player that can help Raja defend those slashers the Mavs have.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and at least two other teams have inquired about Banks, and the Suns might be willing to move him as a way to shed payroll — he makes more than $20 million over the next four years — without getting anything back. But Phoenix would require a significant contributor in return to consider moving Thomas, who still has one year left on his contract at $8 million.

Trading Thomas would be absolutely stupid, but I like the idea of adding Gooden somehow (frontline rotation of Stoudemire-Gooden-Marion-Thomas-Diaw looks great to me)....

The only deal including KT that makes sense is the one mentioned in the Republic today that would mean getting PJ Brown (expiring contract). Long term deals like for Gooden are a financial disaster.

My guess is that the Suns will simply eat the luxury tax for a year with KT and possibly sign him to a vet minimum after that. In any case, the Suns will need to be sure they have added a low post defender before giving up the best they have.
