Was browsing phxsuns.net, and came accross this post. Don't know how reliable it is:

Gambino on the Arizona Sports Report had some interesting things to discuss. He stated that the Suns are continually trying to ship Knight to Utah and the Clippers. They want to get rid of his contract so badly that they are willing to part with a first rounder and cash. All we would take in return is a second rounder. Also, he said that the Suns are very unimpressed with Dejan and they will probably cut him by Friday. Someone like Shappard or Weathers will make the team but they will probably only be around until Scott returns. There ya go...

Nice handle!! Also, I am amazed they will trade a first round pick!! Essentially from what I have read, if they cut him later, then his salary doesn't count at year's end anyways. This rumored move has me baffled!! :(

If we keep Joe Johnson, and he continues to improve, he's gonna get 5+ mil a year. We will obviously be maxing Amare. We have max contracts in Marbury and Matrix. I would guess that their thinking is (and note I never said I agree with it or not) that its time to start surrounding their core with veteran help, and/or FA signings. Getting another 1st round pick means taking on a guaranteed contract, and then facing the possibility of not being able to pay them and losing them anyway.

I dont know the business of basketball, so I could be way off base here, but isnt that plausible?

I can see where the first round pick may not be used in your reasoning. However, you NEVER just give away a first round pick for essentially nothing. At best you trade it for another first later on down the road. Or do what SA did in allowing us to take Barbosa for a future first rounder. I don't think you go, here take a guy we are going to cut anyway, Knight, and we'll give you a first round pick on top of it!! :D The way I am understanding our position with Knight is that we COULD cut him and NOT have it count against our cap. Then just cut him if that's the problem!!

No, that's not the case. If it were, the Suns would have cut Knight already.

I have read we can't cut him in the first 30 days per NBA labor agreement. Also, as long as he is NOT on the payroll at the end of the year he doesn't count against the cap. I also understood that midway through the season we COULD cut him, but that would mean we paid 2.5 million of his salary to that point, and the Suns are looking to avoid that. I am saying it's worth 2.5 million, in my opinion for a first round pick. That's a commodity you can just go out and purchase. Once they lose a first round pick, it's gone!! :D

It doesn't matter whether they cut him or not. They will still have to pay his salary. In the NBA contracts are guaranteed. He would still count on the salary cap also. I think he still counts on the cap even if he retires.

The only way to get rid of them is to trade him or to buy him out.

ok this is from a interview with fj

Question: How is Koturovic doing in terms of getting to feel comfortable out on the court?

Johnson: That is happening a lot slower than I would have liked. The system, the terminology and just energy level, but we have two more games and we’ll see what he can do and we’ll watch him in practice as well.

I know for a fact, only guys on the roster at the END of the season count on the cap. That way trades and other moves are simplified when figuring the luxury tax. :D

The rest of the Knight scenario is what I am questioning based on what I read in I believe was an ESPN NBA Insider article posted on this sight.

You are wrong Yuma. People can count against a cap for years if they retire/waived. Even with a buyout, they can count against two teams cap at once.

See Shawn Kemp.

What you are thinking of is the luxary tax. If he is not on the roster on the last day of the season, he does not count towards the tax.

I thought I said luxury tax? That's what the Collangelos are worried about paying at the end of the season! To move a guy and give up a pick just to avoid the luxury tax is stupid, IMHO. :)

You didnt say tax there tho =)

About your other comment:

Imagine you own a grocery store. You pay your baggers $5.15 an hour.

If you had to pay the union of grocery stores an ADDITIONAL $5.15 an hour for every hour every bagger worked wouldnt you try and lower the amount of baggers???

I mean who wants to pay $10.30 for a minimum wage job?
