I would let him go. Other thoughts?

The Suns on Monday have a decision to make regarding Leandro Barbosa.

The veteran guard has a $4 million contract for next season, but only $500,000 is guaranteed. If Barbosa remains on the roster past Monday, his entire contract becomes guaranteed.

I'd like to keep Barbosa for something around the veteran minimum. I'm not sure about the rules offhand in regard to the Suns waiving him and then later resigning him.

Love Barbosa but if we are going full youth movement this year he'd be better off hooking up with a contender again. He would be a nice addition for Houston and reunite with D'Antoni.

Yeah...It seems like the Suns are trying to get young assets by taking on contracts, and there are a good number of teams who need to clear cap space. That $3.5 million is better served helping us bring future assets via a trade.

All this "taking on salary to collect assets" has been purely theoretical. $3.5M isn't gonna make them or break them. Leave him alone- he's a good guy, great locker room presence, and he has a long history here. He also has championship experience as a rotation player.

What else are they going to use it on?

I agree with all your points about him being a good locker room presence and having great experience, and I like him, BUT...

The Bucks, Rockets, Nuggets, etc. have all been rumored to be seeking cap space. The Clippers want Gallo and are open to a 3-team trade to get him. The Wolves are rumored to be offering the Thunder 2018 pick to take on Aldrich and his $7 million a year in salary.

With the cap going down, there are a lot of teams scrambling for cap space again, and that's when teams are prone to making mistakes. I'd rather keep the cap flexibility and see if it pays off.

I also would rather move on from Barbosa because he is much better at creating shots for himself than others. Nothing wrong with that, but not what we should be looking for from veterans on the court imho.

This is where the Suns can profit from teams who have overspent their credit card limit. :)

The Suns might even be able to trade a conditional 2nd round pick for a nice player.

But that's all theoretical. Suns have the space- $27M right now. It will go down once the rookies are signed and Len or Williams extended, but $3.5M isn't gonna make any difference.

Nothing on Barbosa yet. Of course the Suns could use him in a trade.

The Suns could be waiting to see if they can move his salary in a deal, this way the next team can cut him right after the trade today. The Suns might be players in teams that are looking to dump salary to pickup a Free Agent and get under the cap to do it.

Keep him. Build up our reputation that we take care of our own.

Plus I love the guy.

We are giving him $500K to walk. That is nice when you can get it. He can still sign somewhere else and double dip.

If we wanted/need to clear more cap space to help facilitate deals then we should have pulled Len's qualifying offer because his cap hold is around $10.5 million, which would give us close to $20 million and keep Barbosa. Eh, I guess this means we have a better chance of seeing Davon Reed this season.

I'm all for that, I really like what little I know about Reed. If Jackson can defend anything close to his hype we could put a strong defensive backcourt&wing on the floor with him, Reed and Bled or even Reed and Ulis. I really think Ulis should start so we have him feeding Booker and Warren out of the gate but I'd be content if Watson would just balance his and Bled's minutes so Eric wouldn't have to rest up on defense. For 24 minutes Bled could be a first rate, two way PG.
