Suns pursue trade for Knicks guard Iman Shumpert

As the Phoenix Suns try to reshuffle their roster for the future, their front office remains motivated to try to acquire New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Suns are willing to give New York a package that includes forward Jared Dudley and possibly a future first-round pick for Shumpert, but the Knicks have so far shown no inclination to do such a deal, sources said.

After tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament in the Knicks' opening game of last season's playoffs, Shumpert returned in January and has started the past 11 games. While Shumpert is still working himself back to the high level with which he performed as a rookie, the Knicks' front office remains a strong proponent of his talent, sources said.

After regretting they passed on Shumpert in the 2011 NBA draft, the Suns pushed the Knicks to include him in sign-and-trade scenarios discussed for Steve Nash in July. In the past week, the Suns have scouted Shumpert in person, sources said.

Dudley has three years and $12.8 million left on his contract, and has been available in trade talks, league sources said. He's averaging 11.8 points and 3.6 rebounds this season.

Phoenix has also tried to move backup point guard Sebastian Telfair for a second-round pick, sources said.

I don't understand why we're trying to give up Dudley AND future picks for Shumpert. He is coming off an ACL injury and he's averaging just 5 pts a game.

Dudley is putting up much better numbers than him and is durable.

Doesn't make much sense but this could just be a rumor. Should be noted though that the Suns FO has had a crush on Shumpert since the draft.

I'm sure that Shumpert represents the Suns future star program, e.g., Beasley, Johnson, Morris and Marshall. This cast is scary. Also Shumpert is only age 22.

Don't get me wrong, I like the potential of Shumpert but not at an outrageous cost, certainly no more than Dudley and a late first round pick.

Alex Kennedy is saying the Suns initiated the talks.

I don't see the Suns having to include any asset with Dudley for Shumpert. In fact, additional assets should be coming our way, not only because of salary cap reasons but because Dudley has more value than Shumpert. I would think a third team would have to be included. The Knicks have no assets outside of Shumpert.

So, what would we do with Dragic, Marshall, Shumpert, and Telfair (to a lesser extent)?

I don't buy this story. Same guy is saying the Knicks have interest in Dudley and was the one that got completely shot down by Gambo regarding Josh Smith. Hoopsworld is the absolute worst when it comes to these rumors.

Knicks fans believe that Shumpert is much better than Dudley. The salaries don't match. The Knicks would have to give up more salary. I don't think I would feel that bad about giving up the Minny/Memphis pick, just none of our own or the Lakers pick.

It is worth giving up what seems to be like unequal assets to make your team core better.

It would have to be something like Dudley/ONeal/Memphis first for Shumphert/Brewer/Thomas/White

I don't think the Knicks would go for this. It would cut $2 million from the Suns payroll come summer.

Knick fans trail only Portland fans in overrating their own players. I remember a few years ago they were convinced signing Mozgov was equivalent to getting top 5 pick for free and that the Nuggets would be lucky to get Wilson Chandler and cap filler for Carmelo.

I'd be alright with getting Shumpert for Dudley, but I'd hope the Suns do their diligence and try to find something better because thats about the bottom return I'd like to see.

On a side note; it always cracks me up when I am skimming some other teams forums and see posts where fans say something like "No way we're giving you Shumpert. Novak for Dudley, final offer!"... as though they have the GM on the line.

Shumpert is lousy. That's a horrible trade.

Elaborate on your evaluation of Shumpert. I certainly am not pushing for something like this, I just put together something that seemed to match with trade restrictions.

Do you really think the Minny/Memphis pick is that valuable? Or is it that you think Shumphert is that bad?

Shumpert is terribly overrated. Please god, don't overpay for this guy.

Both. I think the Min pick will likely be a mid 1st in 2014 which I would certainly value more than Shumpert.

Shumpert reminds me of Stuckey at the same stage and think he'll have a similar career arc. And I wouldn't trade Dudley for him.

Shumpert is a SG to not a PG in the NBA.

Adrian Woj confirmed the story with his own sources (read the OP) and he's among the most reliable in the business.

I read some Knick fans thinking they would be getting Dudley and our lottery pick. Knick fans are crazy.

Elaborate on your evaluation of Shumpert.

Granted, I haven't seen much, although I do watch Knicks games from time to time because I get a kick out of Walt Frazier. But Shumpert is 39% shooter, which is unacceptable, and the times that I've watched him, his decision-making on offense has been poor and his defense has been nothing special. I see no reason at all to believe that he'll ever become a rotation player in the league.

OK. I think he is better on d than you are giving him credit for. I think this evaluation is pretty accurate.

Shump and Kurt Thomas

For

Dragic, Dudley, Beasley, 2 1sts, and Morris.

Works for both teams.

Suns are still short. Add 2nd rounders, pick swap, and cash, then we got a deal.
Good God!

Iman Shumpert would've been my pick in Draft! Suns hinted at getting Markieff Morris along with Shumpert and at the time Drafting Markieff with Suns Pick and possibly Shumpert a few spots later... though I think the Suns projected him to go lower, and Knicks ruined that party.

If he's still got elite athleticism (injury) I'd be interested in Dudley and the Wolves/Grizzlies Pick for him.

I like him much more than Avery Bradley - who really doesn't score much, rebound, or, pass. Not many 3's, FT's, and as good as AB is defensively - doesn't get many steals. But that's just me lol both are elite defenders but Iman is chiseled 6'5 and has shown more in these areas over Bradley!

Shumpert's rookie season: 9.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.8 apg, 40% fg, 31% 3fg
Wesley Johnson's rookie season: 9.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.9 apg, 40% fg, 36% 3fg

Both players regressed in their second season (at least through 11 games for Shumpert, coming off a major injury).

Shumpert is three years younger and a better defender. But I see nothing at this point to convince me that he will have a much brighter career than someone like Wes Johnson. I don't think that the Knicks are in position to "sell high" on this player, but I'm afraid that the Suns management doesn't have the basic skills necessary to negotiate a good deal and will give up the house for a player they like.

Wes Johnson cant dribble. I dont think you cant project his career path onto many other guys because its very rare that you see an "NBA" player (especially at a wing position) so utterly pathetic at one of the basic facets of the game.

I'm not crazy about a Dudley/Shumpert swap, but I do think that Shumpert is a much more intriguing prospect than Wes Johnson ever was. Shumpert is an excellent defender, especially for a guy his age. Even if the rest of his game stagnates, his defense prowess will keep him in the league, while Wes Johnson will be seeking a job in Europe or China this time next year.

I don't see this happening. Dudley would be more valuable on the Knicks then with the Suns. Shumpert has not done squat in the NBA, I think he has a little more value than Wes Johnson, but not much. I could see a Dudley and protected top 20 pick or they get the Lakers-Cavs-Heat (pick swap) pick if the Lakers make the playoffs.

It would be more realistic to send Brown & a pick or Marshall & pick.

This is another STUPID move IF Sarver does it. Why would you trade for Shumpert? This team needs a star, not another potentially good player. The Suns need to keep their picks unless they can land a legitimate star player. Shumpert is not that and won't be that. You already have a similar player there in Shannon Brown. Brown is better than Shumpert. Why Brown isn't a starter on this team is a joke.

The more you say the less credibility you have. Your last sentence declares loudly "I do not watch the Suns, EVER". Brown has been a starter for us and Brown, most nights, was, by far, our WORST starter. He's a slightly below average defender and a very inconsistent offensive player and on top of that he is a notorious ball stopper. He's ideally suited for an off the bench role. When he's hot, he's unstoppable and when he's not, he's unplayable. And he's not often hot.

Yeah, I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about Dudley or Shumpert but I want us to no longer be the franchise that throws away 1st round picks. We're in this mess in large part because we undervalued draft picks.
