I wonder why no other team needed Earl Barron???

This was a really weird off season due to the LeBron chase. Clearly there were some odd moves by teams like the Knicks who were obsessed with clearing cap space for Amare and somebody else too.

Most of his career has been with D-League. He seems to be a "late" bloomer, but did not stay with the Knicks long enough to overcome early perceptions. Here is what Draftexpress wrote in May of 2008:

May 6, 2008
Overview: A big bodied young center who has been forced to contribute in Miami due to injuries. Very tall, and pretty long as well. Good bulk, even by NBA standards. An average athlete, but gets off the ground decently. More known for his midrange game than his abilities at the rim. Fairly skilled for his position. Shows a nice, soft jumper with range out to just past the free throw line. Able to catch and shoot pretty well. Doesn’t do a whole lot in post up situations. A little bit on the soft side. Solid rebounder offensively, but doesn’t grab too many on the defensive end. Doesn’t show ideal anticipation when trying to block shots from the weak-side. Very foul prone. Had a half-way decent career at Memphis, but nothing that would indicate that he’d develop into an NBA player. Has spent time in the NBADL, as well as in the Philippines. Shows glimpses of what he can do against lesser competition, but hasn’t been able to figure out how to stay on the floor at the NBA level, despite his above average skill level. A lot of that has to do with his defensive ability.

Offense: Gets about a third of his touches in spot up situations, with another two fifths coming off of cuts and offensive rebounds. Displays a consistent midrange shooting stroke, which is without question his best offensive weapon. Takes some contested shots that he probably shouldn’t. Runs the pick and pop frequently. Proves to be a capable finisher at the rim as well. Works well off the ball, which helps him score a few easy baskets at the rim. Needs to do a better job absorbing contact. Lacks some toughness in that regard. Doesn’t show much back to the basket game. Won’t put the ball on the floor very often. An average passer.

Defense: Doesn’t have the strength to maintain position on the block, and lacks the lateral quickness necessary to step out and defend players that like to face up in the post. Usually asked to defend the center position, but struggles as a weak-side defender. Has a hard time containing bigger, strong post players. Doesn’t show good discipline when contesting shots. Will reach over the top and get called for a lot of fouls. Decent rebounder, but nothing to write home about. Not a defensive playmaker

Apparently the Suns waived Janning to make room for Barron. Tough break for the kid. I hope that he makes it one day.

Technically the Suns did not have to waive anyone since they can carry up to 15 players and Barron would have been the 15th. So waiving Janning would be a purely financial move, although it didn't seem like he would get to play anyway.

Highly unlikely that he does make it but good luck to him. I rather have size than Matt Janning any day!

Why did the Knicks get rid of this guy? The Knicks got rid of EVERYONE they could in order to join the LeBron sweepstakes? Anyone remember that minor event? LOL! :)

Come on. Signing Childress and Warrick weren't good moves?

Yes, signing Childress was another good move - I was all for that at the time but I overlooked him when I spoke. In the context of the team being extremely short at PF and C positions, signing both Hedo and Warrick was not good. From my point of view, which is to have the second unit succeed by playing good defense signing either one of them was a mistake. As was letting Amundson go.

I've been watching the Suns give defense short shrift for over forty years now and I had this faint hope that if, in spite of themselves, they had a unit that could succeed by defending well they might open their eyes. The second unit was close to that last season - it seemed likely then it was just dumb luck - not a conscious plan. The casting off of Lou and signing two defensive weaklings in Hedo and Warrick makes it obvious it was a fluke.

I suppose it wasn't a fluke to Steve Kerr as he had more than a passing interest in defense. I wouldn't be too surprised if the failure of his cohorts in the FO to even notice the second unit was playing good defense was part of the reason he left so abruptly. I can imagine what's his name telling Kerr that one player he wasn't going negotiate with was Amundson, and Steve getting sick to his stomach on the spot.

So you would rather not have Warrick and have Lou instead? Come on now.

Lou was a great crowd favorite, but he wasn't going to be a consistent rebounder and will never be a good scorer. There's no reason to think otherwise, per-48 stats or no.

Oh yea! Haha they even gave away a first rounder with Jeffries I believe to free cap space for Jebron. FAIL!

+1

Warrick has played well thus far though...although his skill set is perfect for this system as a SF/PF. Put him back on a squad that wants to defend people and he's just another athletic SF who cant do much other than the occasional highlight dunk.

Looks like a 7 footer with mobility; not a great rebounder based on career numbers, but did have a decent rebound rate with the Knicks in the limited time he played with them last year. At the very least, he's a big body in the middle while Lopez is on the shelf.

7 footer, can hit mid range jumper, soft on defense, maybe not a good rebounder, can run. Sounds like the normal Suns center to me!

I think most Suns fans wanted the Suns to sign a true PG like Scottie Reynolds rather than Janning. I was hoping Janning could turn out to be a contributor at the 1-2 position but it appears Reynolds would have a better choice although I do not have a progress report from Europe.

Earl Barron is the only Suns player who has a championship ring (Miami Heat).

It looks like with Dragic's progress, there are no minutes for another PG right now. A 2 guard had a better chance to get on the floor, except right now JRich is so hot, you don't want to take him out of the game. Neither Reynolds or Janning would have got minutes as it is going right now. We do need another big body. If Barron works out, I'd like to see him stick since Lopez can't get a lot of minutes due to foul trouble and also health. If he doesn't do well, I guess we play undersized all year. Nothing new for the Suns.

Looks like Scottie signed with Italy, played 4 games (averaging 12.3 points, 2.5 assists and 2.3 steals), then decided to leave Italy (and throw away a lot of money) and enter the NBA D-League Draft (being drafted 13th overall by Tulsa, then traded to Springfield. He's trying to play his way into the NBA.

This is exactly what they said about Nash before we traded him to Dallas.

So much the better if Dragic turns into another Nash no matter how unlikely. I still like having another PG on the roster (such as Scottie Reynolds) in case of injury if nothing else.

I much preferred Reynolds over Janning for our team. Even somewhat hampered by an injury, Scottie pushed the ball up the floor well and showed good floor vision on the break. He didn't show too much in the half court but the guys that saw him play in college said that he was crafty and good under pressure. I like Dragic okay, but I'm not entirely sold on him as our future at PG so it made sense to me to bring Reynolds along and give Goran some competition. However the latter reacted to that pressure would be good information.

At the time Reynolds signed in Europe it looked like he wanted to be someplace he'd get playing time - and it looks like that is still the case. But, heck, we could sign him and let him play in the DevL a fair bit - that's what its there for. At least, if either Nash or Dragic was out for a while we'd have a backup PG, like Mainstreet said.
