There is nothing startling here. The Suns need a third PG to rest Nash in practice and Dragic is out for at least another game. I've always believed in having a third PG on the roster. I just wish the Suns would acknowledge that it is always wise to carry at least a role playing PG on the roster for the above reasons and to have a third option at such a critical position. Actually it is sort of ironic that Dragic and Dowdell are not true distributing PGs.

Although that seems to be exactly what Z has been doing--trying to distribute.

I wish I felt some enthusiasm for this signing - my first thought was, 'no Scottie Reynolds this year'.

I do like it from the point of view of changing Dragic's situation - giving him a day to day competitor. I don't really care whether it hurts him or lights a fire under him - the state he's been in this year has changed him from the probable PG of the future to the PG flash-in-the-pan.

So, does it look like Dowdell might find a home here long term? He seems to improve every game. He is playing within himself, managing the floor, and seems to keep order with Nash out of the game.

10/6/5 with one turnover against the Warriors (in 20 minutes) is fairly impressive.

Seems to me we should keep him. If Goran is off, we have another option.

I don't know about a long term home, but a piece of glass literally gave him a shot on a team that is just starting to get it going. He is looking less shell shocked and does distribute the rock.

Even better, the roster just keeps getting more competitive. Dragic has to show up, we've seen him ball and we've seen him look like he is playing in a groggy dream. Now his job is on the line, but him and Gortat seem to be hitting it off so who knows what that will bring.

The roster is getting interesting, it's a lot easier to decide who you want to play instead of who you have too. We can easily move Dudley and Gortat to the starting line up but Gentry does have something going with bringing them in at the right times.

Sorry to get off base, Z is doing a good job and Goran better watch his ass. Goran could in up in NY. :p

I like Dowdell, he is patient with the ball and makes smart passes and some of them are no-look and he isn't a turnover prone guard either.

Last night is not a good example to evaluate him against an exhausted Golden State team that was on back-to-backs with half the game being garbage time.

GS is a young backcourt. I don't buy the "exhausted" excuse. No, Dowdell hasn't done it consistently yet, but I won't take anything away from that showing last night.

In these times of 30-second sound bytes and instant gratification, sports fans expect new players to step into the greatest basketball league in the world upon short notice and be Steve Nash.

It took Steve two teams and quite a few years to become Captain Canada, handling the most responsible position on the court.

If Dowdell had totally failed, it would still not have meant that he doesn't have the potential to become a good NBA Point Guard.

The fact that he is doing well when sporadically given the chance is a real plus. Better that than a minus.

It will be interesting to see how Dragic performs upon his return. If having Dowdell looking over his shoulder has the same effect as Gortat playing behind Lopez, it will be a plus. If Dowdell shows that he is better as a backup Point Guard than Dragic, that will also be a plus.

Speaking of Lopez, it is still frustrating to watch him lose rebounds and loose balls out of bounds one play after another. He and his brother total about the same number of rebounds you would expect from a starting Center. Is it something wrong with their hands or do they need a checkup-from-the-neck-up? :)

I'm really pulling for Dowdell. I hope he is growing into the PG role because he has played quite well. He is not playing like he did in summer league the past two seasons. The key difference, he is playing focused and with composure. I'm crossing my fingers because if he can keep playing well it could effect how the Suns draft. As PG is a key need in the upcoming draft the Suns may well be able to look at the BPA with their two picks. Also I like that he can push Dragic.
