But I think it did affect them. Because of Gordon's offer sheet still counting against the Suns cap after NO matched, the Suns didn't have enough cap space to claim Scola and had to amnesty Childress when Scola was awarded to them. I believe that had it not been for Gordon, Childress would not have been amnestied, at least not yet. And if the Suns don't hand out any more large contracts, then it's quite possible that Childress would have been in Phoenix for at least one more season.
There was a deadline on the 17th for teams to use their amnesty provisions this year. So, unless they felt like they were totally done making outside players contract offers and didnt care about that cap flexibility during the season, Childress was toast either way.
And just to avoid confusion. Yes, the amnesty provision is a one use thing (at least until there is another lockout/strike), but there is a dead line during each offseason for teams to decide if they want to their one time provision. That deadline was the 17th, and I would imagine its placed there so the released player would still have a reasonable amount of time to find a new team before everyone fills out their rosters. Also, only players under contract
before the new CBA was adopted are allowed to be amnestied. So, clock was ticking. If they wanted to get much use out of the option it probably needed to be used this summer.
