He's on a losing team trying for the worst record. He's not an unrestricted free agent, so his choice will be qualifying offer or extension--which he only has 20 games to earn. If he doesn't want to be a Sun, it's pretty easy.
Take the qualifying (after all, he was traded for a 2nd rounder, he's not going to get big money this summer) and use NEXT year as his "contract" year since he will be unrestricted and no longer tied to the Suns. Of course, the Suns could put a wrench in that, but I don't see why or even how they would do that.
I liked Payton when we first got him, those triple-doubles were impressive. But the luster has worn off big time. And no, I absolutely don't think it's because of the hair.
