Agreed, there's no home for Ulis on this team after this season, even if we don't draft a PG. I'd rather have both Payton and Shaq harrison than him, and probably also Brandon Knight at this point. (I can't believe I just typed that).

Is it just me or does it not seem like Elfrid Payton doesn't give a crap about basketball.

Wears that idiotic hairdoo that makes him look like a fool on the court and probably hinders his game (although there is no proof).
Plays like he doesn't give a rip IN A CONTRACT YEAR.

To me, there are only two explanations. He doesn't care about basketball or he is on drugs.

And the 3rd one: he did realize that this season is over, the Suns' only goal is getting the worst record.

Contract year. If he doesn't get that, refer back to one or two.
He's on a losing team trying for the worst record. He's not an unrestricted free agent, so his choice will be qualifying offer or extension--which he only has 20 games to earn. If he doesn't want to be a Sun, it's pretty easy. Take the qualifying (after all, he was traded for a 2nd rounder, he's not going to get big money this summer) and use NEXT year as his "contract" year since he will be unrestricted and no longer tied to the Suns. Of course, the Suns could put a wrench in that, but I don't see why or even how they would do that.

I liked Payton when we first got him, those triple-doubles were impressive. But the luster has worn off big time. And no, I absolutely don't think it's because of the hair. :)

Weren’t people saying this about Chriss too? Maybe he influenced Payton?

Umm... there is a reason he was available for a 2nd round pick, and it is not because he was a supremely motivated and productive player.

Ah, the consequence of tanking. It is ruining the Suns and it is ruining the league.

I'll say it, tank brigade. For months many of us foresaw that it would cause a negative effect on our young team in the long run.

You need a better example than Payton. He is an unrestricted free agent this summer and he is playing for a contract. Tanking shouldn't have anything to do with how Payton plays.

The NBA has changed the odds in next year's lottery to discourage tanking.

The Suns are prepared to take the next step forward this summer. Only 7 more games BC.

I think it is a bit overboard to say that it is ruining the Suns. Sure they are hard to watch right now, but believe it or not the end goal is being met. We already have Booker (obviously not a product of tanking) and Jackson (who was a product of tanking). Now we need to hit on this pick and start building around those 3 players. We already have a solid building block in TJ (assuming he isn't used in a trade) and will have ample opportunity to target free agents and plenty of assets to look for trades. There is no reason this team should look any where near this bad next season. Also need to hit on the coaching hire.

My guess is the Suns will not give Payton a qualifying offer. IMO, he has not proven himself and he frees up $10 million in free agency if they do not offer it.

It may be the best decision to let him go and draft or trade for a PG.

That’s where Payton’s status as a restricted free agent comes in. His cap hold this summer is just under $10 million. If Phoenix renounces Payton’s rights by not extending a qualifying offer of $4.5 million, he would become a free agent and the Suns would have another $10 million to spend in free agency.

Tyler Ulis is playing for a contract as well. As I understand it, his contract is not guaranteed next season. However, he is stepping up to the challenge as he now appears to be fully healthy.

Ulis' contract for next season is only $1,544,951.

OK. So you are saying he doesn't give a crap about playing for the Suns. He wants out. I guess that could look the same too. Still. Lots of money he's flushing down the drain.

I don't think the Suns have made a qualifying offer to Payton and I doubt it's coming.

Your evidence is Payton? Please the dude has been underwhelming since being drafted and was had for a 2nd round pick. His sucking is more a reversion to the norm then the impact of tanking. He’s been here how many games and youre blaming his dismal play on tanking? Cmon, that’s silly.

And the end of this season is HARDLY the “long run.” OUR long run is two to three seasons from now when our youth and the hopefully great players we get from the tank (remember the end of last year and MAYBE this injury riddled end to this year are the only tank experiences) - you know josh Jackson and maybe Ayton - are coming of age. THAT’S OUR long run.

Even if that would be merely the consequence of tanking, I take it.

After misjudging what the Suns are capable of and losing at least 5 years therefore, the Suns finally realized what they need to do.

Going down and picking up future core players.

They (luckily and at the same time making a great pick) have found one in Booker. Perhaps another one in Jackson. Probably one more in top3 this year and until they find the core players they need to obtain draft picks as many and as high as possible.

Payton’s play, to me, means that PG is the Suns #1 need this off season.

I have been saying this for a while. It will be easier to add a big than a pg in free agency.

We still need to draft the BPA. But it’s a big, there is still a LOT of work to do.

If we don’t draft a PG with our first pick, it’s going to be very possible.

Maybe. It's hard to know the Suns thinking at the moment.

However, I don't think Payton's play has alleviated the Suns need for a PG. If they don't draft one, which I think they will somewhere in the draft, they may trade for one.

Never said it did. However, say they did draft a Sexton or equivalent. Would you be ok with Ulis and Harrison as the other PGs on the roster in his first year?

I'd want a veteran PG behind or in front of e.g., Sexton.

I'm not sure that the veteran PG should be Payton unless things change dramatically.

I'd be alright with Ulis as the third PG and Harrison as a development player.

Saw this posted today from an NBA site I follow. I thought Payton would be flying under the radar on the Suns since they're so bad but it's not just Suns fans who bash his hair.

I have hope in Knight--he is the veteran PG we're looking for. He was terrible last year, but he's a real NBA player, unlike many of the guys have shown this year. If his job is secure as the starting PG, I think that would do wonders for his confidence and performance. I think a healthy Ulis is an adequate backup. I'd also like Doncic but think Knight would still be getting solid minutes if the Suns grabbed Doncic if they are truly trying to compete.

I hate to say it, but I would chose BK over Payton right now, and its not even really close.
