I'm not sure that what the Suns need is a "play" as much as the ability to recognize situations like, "if a player gets the ball in the low post, then the weak side player needs to cut to basket to get a pass or make a rebound."

At the same time, Amare (and Jahidi) need to recognize where the double teams come from. If it comes from the man playing Williams, then passing to Scott at the foul line is a good bet. If it comes from the guard postion, then someone is open for a jumper or as a cutter. All this comes from good coaching, getting the players to watch a lot of game tapes, and experience.

Franks fault? Maybe. But if it were as easy as all that everybody would do it.

Hopefully, the Suns will never follow such general plans... they might have three guys on the weak side all tripping over each other as they dash to the hoop. And it could well be a guy on the strong side that has a good path to the hoop. A player has to think about he and his defender screwing up the play of the guy low post if he cuts in willy-nilly so he has to consider his timing and where different paths put him and his defender relative to what the guy with the ball might do. He might also consider setting a screen for someone else so they can make an effective cut. Or maybe there's a nice open spot he can slide to which is within his range and where the guy with the ball would see him. Even that might require fine timing as the open spot will not be left unguarded long after he moves to it. What he does may depend heavily on whether or not the guy in the low post is or soon will be double teamed or if they are playing zone D. I think this makes a pretty strong case for 'plays'.

Franks a head coach in the NBA... if this sort of thing is beyond him then he has chosen the wrong line of work and the guy who hired him should start looking for another job, too.

Weak side cuts are not that hard to figure out. The person on the baseline cuts. Obviously there has to be some sort of plan about where the cutter is coming from -- but not just stand there and watch!
