that's Abrams "calling card"... he did it somewhat in MI:3 and then went crazy with it in Star Trek. I didn't mind it in Star Trek, actually thought it was pretty cool with whole space thing going on, but i don't know how it plays in Super 8.

Annoying. Seriously, there were a few scenes where it was so incredibly distracting that it drew my eye away form the characters in the scene. None of his other previous films did it impact me like in did in Super 8.

I thought this movie was really good but not great, which is exactly how I view Abrams as a moviemaker. I liked where he was trying to go with this movie but never seemed to get it there.

I went in with low expectations and was really blown away. I totally loved this movie. For me it was a nostalgic thing. It reminded me of the Summer Blockbusters that I watched with my friends growing up. Super 8 is a true Summer Blockbuster and highly entertaining.

Like I said before, I had low expectations going in. After listening to Elle Fanning in a bunch of interviews I was expecting her to be terrible. Boy was I surprised. Fanning was fantastic as was the boy who played Joel.

I think Abrams really nailed the human aspect of this film. You instantly feel conected with the characters he created and that is what makes this movie such a success IMO.

I highly recommend this movie. Go see it in the theater.

Just saw it today.

I liked it a lot too. But, I hadn't read any reviews so I had no expectations going into it. It's definitely really good compared to most summer blockbusters coming out nowadays. The characters were believable and the little love story was cute. It's good enough that I'm going to take my two oldest daughters to see it before it leaves the theaters. I can't remember the last time I paid to see a movie twice in the theater.

Didn't really know what this was about other than that it was sci-fi. So I didn't really have any expectations, though I knew it was highly rated on RT.

First hour or so, very good. The train crash was really well done. Well paced, suspenseful.

The second half, however, was very predictable. The suspense was gone, the pacing was off, and the plot and its resolution was recycled from a dozen or so similar movies. It's a real shame too, because there was some potential for a great sci-fi film. I suppose for a genre movie, it is still well above average, and as a family adventure it works very well, but overall it didn't leave much of an impression on me afterwards.

Is it just me or does the military always act as so-called "villains" in this types of movies? As Hollywood loves to play the military as villains!

Picked this up on BluRay and watched it again.

I still think this is a real good movie. Enjoyed every minute of it.

I agree. The ending just tied itself up too nicely and quickly.
The first 2 acts are great. Loved the soundtrack too....it seems i can always count on Abrams for good musical choices.

The kids night to film/trainwreck scene was awesome.Incredibly well filmed and executed. Honestly i was hoping for more of this tone later in the film, but we got ET instead. Thats ok though...
Super 8 was quite honest in its homage to Spielberg(even with him being one of the producers).

My chick hates horror and anything scary and was hiding behind a book for most scenes until she found out it was a ncie alien and suddenly she was ok with everything.

I thought it ended too fast and easy LOTR style.

Wow, pretty much across the board that expectations were too high. I totally agree. I still liked it, but I was ready for the next big E.T. and I got a solid watch-once type of film.

Love this movie... 'Goonies' meets 'ET'... Kinda...

Man, it would have been awesome if they could have pulled it off.

It had it's moments but it lacked the charm of E.T. although I'd have said the same thing about Goonies. I gave it a second watch and thought it improved somewhat but still felt like it was lacking something.

it lacked a good 2nd half IMO. The first half had me on the hook.
