Superhero Movie

Release Date: March 28, 2008
Studio: Dimension Films (The Weinstein Company), MGM
Director: Craig Mazin
Screenwriter: Craig Mazin
Genre: Action, Comedy

Plot Summary: How many superheroes does it take to save the world? The creators of "The Naked Gun" and "Scary Movie" answer this question in hysterical "David Zucker" fashion with the uproarious comedy "Superhero Movie." Meet Rick Riker. He's young, he's cool and he's got superpowers. Now, if he only knew how to use them... but the world is in danger and no one is safe when Zucker and the gang - headed by the hilarious cast of Drake Bell, Leslie Nielsen, Tracy Morgan, Pamela Anderson, Regina Hall and many others - take aim at some of the biggest blockbusters of our time including "Spider-Man," "Batman," "X-Men," and "Fantastic Four," to name a few. On March 28th, learning to fly, spinning a web and busting a gut has never been this much fun.

Zucker's losing me, and fast.

Kentucky Fried Movie
Airplane
Naked Gun
Basketball (although looking back, this was the begining of the end.)

even the original Scary Movie had it's dingy-yet funny moments.

I'm alway leery of a movie when they have to try this hard to tell you it's going to be funny. Just tell me who's doing what, I don't need to be told it's going to be zany.

How about Pretentious Movie? I could write that. I bet Chaplin could make equally potent satirical contributions. The fact that it would actually be offensive makes it worth doing! And the intro shot to every scene will be a clumsy recreation of the "through the window" shot in Citizen Kane. Lots of people mugging for the camera staring off into space with self-absorption, a cigarette butt pillowing its last cancer-causing smoke in the ashtray. Every 20 minutes we'll have someone jump into frame with a Jefferson Smith-type filibuster speech.

We will paint every corporation to ever have filed incorporating papers as evil as a Nazi snuff film.

Almost forgot ... mandatory ending of a white male lawyer holding an AK-47 shooting college-bound Bambi in the 'hood.

I'm not sure why they need to make these movies so dumb. The older films like Naked Gun and Airplane! where able to be silly without being ridiculous like this movie and other recent spoofs like Epic Movie. Parts of this film were really funny, but overall it was just too dumb to really enjoy.

The Tom Cruise impersonator was dead on though. The pitch in his voice is a little off, but the expressions and mannerisms are frighteningly good.
