This off season will be a benchmark for this franchise. A new coaching staff and a franchice QB are very real possibilities. But that wont be enough to save this moribund franchice, after all we just watched a similiar scenario go down in a cloud of desert dust.
In order to achieve success the entire organization is going to have to rise out of that dust cloud like the proverbial Phoenix to have any chance at success.
There are many on this board with business acuem greater than mine, but my limited training and experience tells me that the greatesr success comes with the achievement of synergy in which the sum is greater than the total of the parts. Unfortunately this organizations business model is nowhere close to being in a position to achieve this allusive goal.
A brief look at the organization indicates a business model based on a command and control enviornment rather than a supporting mentoring enviornment with clear stated goals and objectives. Please note that this does not specifically apply to the the coach player relationship. Breaking down the organization into several parts and lokking at each part indicates to me that not only do we need to upgrade the coaching staff and player talent but more importantly the entire business philosophy need to radicaly change in order to achieve success.
Taking a look at the indivdual parts shows me the following:

Ownership: THe soul and driving fire of a business. Ours shows neither, at least publicly. This needs to change now. Specific goals need to be set and a clear path needs to be established in how to get there. Adequate capital must be provided to achieve the plan. If not on hand it must be found and commited to without reservation. Again this commitment has not been made by ownership in the past. Ownership also, most importantly IMHO, needs to provide unequivical suppport to the organization not a half hearted effort just to protect the bottom line.

Management: Ours is a dishelved mess of family, cronies and for hires all with different agendas and ideas. In my opinion this is where we need the most work. THere needs ro be a restructuring of this group regardless of hurt feellings or family ties. It will be the biggest challenge facing ownership. This group then needs to be given free reign to achieve the goals set by ownership without interference.

Staff: In most business models this would be al encompassing in this particular model it nedds to be broken down.
Support staff: Front office, PR, Marketing, WHile Mr Minenger, our own Mr Omohondro and others are trying, they also seem to be limited by constraints placed by others. THis group needs to be turned loose and to think outside of the box to bring in new customers. This staff also needs to exhibit more enthusiasm in there interaction with the public.
Staff Team. The heart of the organization. THey are the ones who actualyy provide the product. One cannot expect a high level of performance from a group that for the past three years has been the youngest in the league. There has been no growth of talent or experience. Yet we have a high salary cap window and a high payroll. A huge blunder that has to be addressed if were ever to succeed.
Staff coaching: Its a shame that this staff will take the brunt of the failure to achive. Its plainly not their fault alone. Hopefully this will be the catalyst that motivates ownership to retool from the ground up. This situation needs to handled carefully and pragmatically. THe outcome may and should surprise many.

Customers: No business can survive without them. This organization is unwearily lucky to have a core group like the ones on this board to build from. But if things dont turn quickly they may blow their last chance. The feelings of disenchantment have never been higher and with the new e world at your fingertips other options are too easy to come by.

Because of the circumstances of the business envoirnment, the NFL, there is hope to turn this shipp around. But if we head into the new stadium with the same old product Im afraid things will degrade further and we may then see the demise of this franchise.

Does Mr B have it in him? We can only watch and hope.

Daytripper - You make good points.

Getting those things implemented continues to be a struggle.

At some point, ownership will either have to (a) sell the team or (b) bring in professional management, hand it a budget and then get out of the way.

At some point, it has to sink in with ownership that -

- Just because you're rich doesn't mean you know what you're doijng.

- Just because you don't know what you're doing doesn't mean you're a bad person.

"Daytripper" very good post, I concur on having the plan laid out with the ultimate goal being a Super Bowl appearance if not a win. Did the St. Louis Rams do this with Vermeil? The New England Patriots were a consistent AFC doormat until something (up top) changed. Without a plan or at least a person with this plan, (Rod Graves?) this franchise will never see mediocrity. I have always believed the family has wanted to at least put a competitive product on the field, but I am starting to doubt they would ever gamble they're financial future to get it done. Three issues in the last decade have made me feel this way.

1998 - Off Season - letting core players leave...

1996-2003 Same essential assistant coaches though we are showing little or no improvement in our usually high draft picks. Especially on defense!

2003 - KVB gets injured & the franchise has done nothing to fill this gap. Starks gets injured Emanuel McDaniel is a tad older & a step or 2 slower.

Agreed. If and when the Bidwill family can seperate these two is when the franchise will start having success. Mr B is no doubt benevolant and charitable. His untold philonthranpic contributions would probably amaze many. THat being said those qualites dont fit the nature of an NFL owner. If only he would realize that succes will only come from competitive business practices, which he could delegate to others. This would translate into even more ability on his part to do what he really seems to enjoy and thats helping others.

Thanks
I agree that 99 ofseason was one of the biggest debacles in this teams history. We are still trying to recover.
This offseason will be, perhaps the last chance the Bdwills have, to turn it around.

After all these many years it is hard to imagine Mr. Bidwill changing in any manner. Basically our organization consist of Bidwill at the top with everyone else below him. The business plan is to save as much money as you can each year but getting rid of high salaried good players and bring in over the hill guys like Smith in hopes he will sell tickets. No one really seems to have full authority and you wonder just how much responsibility each is given. You wonder if any of these guys even has a job description or if Bidwill even knows what one is. As a business man Bidwill is terrible. If he had to run a business to make a profit based on his management style he would be bankrupt very shortly. In the long run this team will probably have to be sold or move once again. No team can survive with attendance running 20,000 and half those cheering for the oposition.
