Tejada hoping A's have change of heart

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Another AL MVP could be on his way out of Oakland.

Athletics owner Steve Schott told star shortstop Miguel Tejada on Saturday that the team won't offer him a multiyear contract after this season.

"I really want to stay here, but I know it will be hard for them to keep me here,'' Tejada said. "That's business. I'm going to keep playing hard. They might change their mind. ... If they want, we can work something out.''

Schott said there would be no negotiations, which Tejada was hoping to get underway during spring training. He wants a long-term contract and the A's can't offer that, Schott said.

Tejada would be the second MVP to leave Oakland in three years. Jason Giambi, the 2000 MVP, signed a $120 million, seven-year contract with the New York Yankees after the 2001 season.

Tejada's agents have asked the team to make an offer first. He can become a free agent after this season.

"I just think the world of him,'' Schott said. "The problem is there's absolutely no way we can sign Miguel to a long-term contract. The system is broken down when only two or three teams can pick up a player of Miguel's caliber and sign him to an eight-to-10-year contract and pay him the money he deserves. This small-market team with the system we have just can't afford him.''

After announcing the decision, Schott took Tejada aside to break the news to him just before the A's beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1.

"I know he's going to be unhappy and hurt about it,'' Schott said.

But Tejada said after the game he understood Schott's position, and the conversation went well.

"He told me the truth and I know he didn't lie to me,'' Tejada said.

Tejada said he would consider accepting less money to stay with the franchise that he joined as an undrafted free agent at age 17 -- and possibly even a one-year contract, though that seems doubtful.

"Depends. Maybe,'' he said.

Schott said the A's would not make Tejada a low offer because, "I'm not going to insult the guy.''

The A's did not trade Giambi before he became a free agent and they made the playoffs in his final year with Oakland. Schott said the team is not considering trading Tejada during the season because he truly believes the A's can reach the World Series.

When Tejada reported to spring training last month, he said he would like to move his family to the Bay area from the Dominican Republic so his two children could attend school in the United States. He wants a stable setting so he doesn't have to switch them from school to school.

Tejada has not said how much money he will ask for. He made $3.65 million last season and will get $5 million this year.

AL Cy Young winner Barry Zito would hate to see Tejada go, but he also understands the circumstances.

"The free agent guys like Miggy are going to demand a big price,'' Zito said. "Seeing another big player who could lead us to the World Series leaving is frustrating as a player. I'm not going to lie. There's two sides of it. Guys want to be paid their value.''

Last season, Tejada hit .308 with 34 home runs and 131 RBI to help the A's win 103 games, and he believes he can play even better. The A's lost to the Minnesota Twins in the AL division series, the third straight season Oakland was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. That's one thing Tejada wants to help fix.

"Now I'm going to prepare to play a real good year,'' he said. "Not because I'm going to go somewhere else or for a big paycheck, but because I think we can go to the World Series.''

Until the A's can generate more revenue -- Schott said it will take a new ballpark to do that -- they won't be able to keep all of their star players. Aside from Giambi, outfielder Johnny Damon and closer Jason Isringhausen also went elsewhere for big money after the 2001 season.

Third baseman Eric Chavez's contract is up after the 2004 season. Schott said each situation is unique, and wouldn't go as far as saying it would be a long shot to re-sign the 2002 Gold Glove winner.

Chavez was surprised by the news Saturday that Tejada probably will be gone. Chavez did say he appreciates the club being up front with its players.

"For some reason, this one's a little bit bigger (than Giambi),'' Chavez said. "He's at the center of our core. It's weird to hear that. Obviously, he's just too much of a commodity for Oakland.''

Schott wishes that weren't the case.

"When you see a person like Miguel, who came from virtually nowhere, he was working ... and begging on the street for 25 cents to help his dad, it is extremely difficult not to keep him in the organization for the future,'' Schott said.

"We could lose two MVPs in two years to the system. Sure, it (ticks) me off.''

It's gonna be the 2nd best move OAK has made since 2001. The best was not re-signing Jason *.

Well that depends. Certainly Tejada's initial idea of and 8 year contract would've made him an undesirable signing, but if he signs with another team at $10-12 million for 5 years, he might've been worth keeping. It might leave you wondering if that occurs, especially since they re-signed Dye to a 3yr/$10 million deal not that long ago.

If Bobby Crosby is the replacement for Tejada, then I wonder if they really are getting an adequate replacement for Tejada. And if the A's just keep getting "adequate" replacements for their star depatures, I wonder how long that lineup will keep producing. With the trio of aces on their staff coming up for free agency in the next few years, I wonder how long the A's can keep producing stars in their system. Although they have some nice prospects in Jeremy Brown and Rich Harden, plus Crosby, they'll still have to have a bit of luck to see those propsects turn into the Zitos and Tejadas of today's team.

This is a franchise though that doesn't have a bright future if it stays in it's current home. Even after winning the last 3 years, the A's still haven't drawn big crowds on a regular basis to the Al Davis enchanced Coliseum. Last year they drew just over 2.1 million at home, about the same as the year before. In 2000 they drew just over 1.7 million. This for a team that's won an average of 99 games over the last 3 years.

Gambo is an idiot.

But I do agree with him on this point. The D-Backs in my opinion are going to build within for the next several years. With the prospects we have at Tucson and El Paso, there is no reason why this team can't infuse some youth while still being competitive.

BTW, if the Diamondbacks let Randolph go while keeping Swindell, they will have made a big mistake. You don't just give away a lefty who led the PCL in victories last year with 15. Randolph is out of options and will never clear waivers. Swindell is washed up and will not help the D-Backs this year. I hope Brenly has the brains and gonads to keep Randolph and release Swindell.

I think todays game with Patterson pitching will decide where he begins the year out at.

The amount the D-Backs will save in salary is far more than the increases. Adding up Matty, Womack, Swindell and Mantei (no way D-Backs take the option with the good relief prospects they have) more than makes up for the increases increases - we're talking $20 mil on those four. All the increases add up to no more than $12 mil (even assuming Kim gets a big jump, which as the 5th starter is not likely). Apparently Finley's deal is backended for next year.

The real reasons they won't I would suspect are all the deferments which will be due and owing over the next several years plus Alex Cintron and/or Tim Olson (isn't he a SS?).

I think Mantei's option for next year is a player not team option.

Mantei's option next year is a player option for $7M and it would be crazy to think he won't excercise it.

BB won't decide between Randolph and Swindell. That's most likely a GM choice.

Patterson's line today, 6 Ip-1 earned run, 8 hits, 3 strikeouts. His last 10 innings he gave up 2 earned runs, with 16 hits.

It seems like he is coming around a little.

Brenly had a long meeting with the coaches early Tuesday morning to discuss roster possibilities.

One quandary is what to do with lefty Stephen Randolph, who has a 1.38 ERA this spring and is out of minor-league options. The D'backs would need to get Randolph through waivers to send him down, which they think is unlikely, so he has a chance to make the team.

"There's a lot of interest in him,"ä Brenly said, "and we just think that before we let anything happen that we're going to regret later, we better give him every possible look we can.ä"

I think the team gave him that contract (player option) so they could "save" more money the following year. I think that's your usual way of figuring the D'backs' salary situation--it's not how much you are spending on future bad contracts--it's how many past bad contracts are expiring.

Thus we'll be in excellent shape when Q, CC, Dessens, Gonzo are in the final years of their contacts.

And if we sign Miguel Tejada, we'll be set up to have more bad years to "save", further down the road.

Just in a mischievous mood.
