Haven't watched the last ep yet, but in the pilot they explained that the only reason they come through to the past is because it was on a different timeline so it wouldn't effect the future.

I think it's obvious that there is some sort of connection from what has been eluded with Taylor's son and his rock scribbles and the Sixers with their talk of the real reason for Terra Nova.

Right but the character the other night seemed to be saying otherwise unless they just meant the future of TerraNova and not their Earth they left.

it was hard to tell what they meant.

This has become very popular among my writing friends:

http://blog.desalvo.org/2011/10/03/terra-nova-drinking-game/

Funny.

I don't get the bogus camp survival skills though. One of the survival shows on Nat Geo or discovery has used sparks to start fires 3 or 4 times now. once from a boat battery once a car battery once a cellphone battery.

If they mean the average person might not be able to do it, probably true, but it's apparently quite possible.

It's referring to the act of a spark igniting a whole log.
Any time they show bogus survival skills (such as a spark igniting a whole-log camp fire)
You can carefully ignite a tinder bundle, but a whole log is ridiculous. I don't remember that scene in the show though.

Yeah, the game was written before the show debuted. They were just anticipating it being REALLY REALLY bad.

One thing that had been bothering me is the casting of the children. The mother is Indian I assume, and the father is caucasian. The girls look like they could be a child of both of them, but the son is straight-up white. Is he a product from a previous relationship of his father and I just missed that detail?

Time distortion is a leading cause of melatonin loss.

I could totally write for this show.

The key here would be the verbage about a whole log fire.

In other words you can't just shower a giant log with sparks and have it just spring into flames.

This happened just last week I think.

It was like episode one, not the pilot but there it was, starting a fire with whole logs in it with sparks.

this show somehow got a two-year commitment (unheard of in my business). it'll run it's 13 and be back next year.

It's because of then enormous upfront costs for the show. That is money already committed. Over 250 sets and 6 weeks of post production per episode. The show has a budget of 4 million per episode.

Like you said that kind of commitment is unheard of. However, the bean counters have it figured out to a "T" how much add revenue they can expect and how long it would take to recoup a percent of the upfront costs.

I am not a huge fan of FOX but I have to give them credit for this enormous financial gamble. They usually are the network that kills anything with potential with high production costs.

My kids really like this show and it has gotten somewhat better.

Still doubt if it will survive much longer though.

THe one last night had plenty of action but some of the stuff just makes me question it.

one of the things that drove me nuts about Star Trek was the medical stuff that was basically Bones with a device that made some beeps and somehow cured anything.

So they did the same thing last night with that kid and the parasite like how does a holographic table device allow them to kill something?

And.....

I question the reason for building a maintenance crawl space that a grown person could not crawl through. Did they expect to use child labor to maintain the Eye? And would it have taken that much more to shield its access? And if you are able to shield something like the Eye would you want to think about making a shield to protect your stockpile of stored chips, especially if your entire colony was dependent on them?

LOL, I just read all that and decided I put way too much thinking into a show I am only watching with the grandson cause he likes the dinosaurs.

:)

yeah there were several obvious wth things in that episode.

Last night the special effects on the fishing trip were hilarious like a bad Syfy movie bad.

Plots are so obvious who didn't know 3 minutes in that wasn't the real professor etc.

The idea of the show is good but they're not doing it very well at all.

I've seen two episodes of this, well 1 1/2 really.

The first one was the one where the wife lost her memory and they were trying to find the cure. I thought it was a decent episode, the plot very, very very very very slightly reminded me of something they would do in Star Trek next gen so on Monday I tried another episode thinking it might be good or atleast get better...

Monday's episode might have been one of the worst things I've ever seen and seriously, what was up with those special effects when they were fishing? It was as bad if not worse than what you would see on the syfy network. Why even have it in there if it's going to be THAT bad?
You must be registered for see images

The guy from Avatar yelled "Get outta here you Coward" at the giant Dinosaur and I had enough and turned it off. And the way the daughter figured out everything about the Dr was also hilariously bad. Just seems like you should either go for good writing and no effects or bad writing with GREAT effects, but they decided to suck in all areas...

I think the whole fishing thing was they wanted to again show us that they can shoot arrows really well. Because they didn't cast the lines, they shot the lines out with arrows which was kind of cool but I think that was the whole point. The fish was so fake it was comical as you said to even include it.

Agreed about the monitor lizard thing the coward comment was laughable.

It's getting bad even my GF is now starting to say is this it.

To those of you still watching this show, have you given any thought to hitting yourself in the face repeatedly with a piece of wood? It will hurt less and unlike this TV show, it will at least leave a mark.:)

The fact that they have all of these hi-tech access control devices like holographic id badges and security cameras everywhere, but don't bother having security cameras or alarm systems monitoring sensitive health care materials is ridiculous. The kid was also not wearing any gloves when he stole the medicine and was touching everything. I guess, figerprinting is extinct. A strange oversight considering the girl was able to pull DNA off an old envelope and compare it in a matter of minutes with DNA from a glass of water. Maybe she should replace her father as the resident Terra Nova detective.

I figured the FX were always going to be suspect with the upfront and production costs being so high for the show. I knew something had to give and figured after the pilot the FX would take a nose dive. I was right. The show is costing the network 4 million per episode and you can tell that most of that money isn't being spent on FX but other production costs on the show.

How else do you explain that shows like BSG, Stargate, Wherehouse 13 and Eureka shows etc... have roughly between 1.5 to 3 million dollar budgets that have FX shot just as good if not better sometimes?

These FX remind me of those Discovery or Science Channel Dino specials with cheese FX. Either that or their FX team sucks. My kids like the show but some of those dino shots make me cringe.
