Their coach and GM will be given six year contracts. I guess they had to do that after going through all the coaches they did in a short amount of time.

Strange move.

Thing I remember Lynch best for was when, as a Giant CB, he allowed Sonny Randle to catch 16 passes in one game.

I don't know if you're having a laugh or not, but John Lynch only played (as a safety) for the Bucs and Broncos.

That direction would be a potential superstar that you snagged at #13. Turning an aging PG on the last year of his contract and about to get a massive payday into two unprotected #1 picks (which look like lottery picks now). Turning a malcontent into a lottery pick. Drafting two young bigs that both show promise.

The IT trade was bad, but in fairness he was signed to that contract as an asset to get a draft pick and that is what he did. Brandon Knight is what he is. He made the right call that the Suns are never seeing that Lakers pick be anything more than a mid round selection and he was right, just traded for the wrong player.

If you want to build a winner in the NBA, competing for the 8th seed isn't going to do it. No Superstar is signing with the Sarver led Suns. Those days are done. So your only hope is to hit on a big trade or draft well. He has drafted well.
How do you figure this? The 76ers are gonna conceive that pick either this year or next year and the Lakers are god awful. The best FAs they can sign are guys like Mozgov and Deng. You think their gonna suddenly be good within a year or something? That pick will at worst be a top 8 pick imo.

this is an organization that from a NFC champtionship and another trip to the NFC Champ game:

1. Fired the coach that got them there

2. After flirting with all sorts of names, they come out of left field and hire the defensive line coach - Jim Tomsula

3. Jim T flames out, and the team desperately needs a steady hand to right the ship, so...

4. After interviewing all sorts of names -- they come out of left field and hire Chip Kelley. The same Chip Kelley who after a good start, flamed out with the Eagles amid all sorts of discontent from the players

5. One year later, Chip Kelley is fired, along with GM Trent Balke.

6. At this point, if i own the 49ers -- im thinking i need a plan, i execute it, and demonstrate i know what i am doing. No more left field moves.

7. Needing both a GM and a headcoach -- the first hire is.............. the head coach. A solid choice in Kyle Shanahan. A little weird though that a young first time HC looks like he has veto power over the GM choice (afterall, this isnt Mike Shanahan or someone of his experience)

8. Now, after narrowing down the GM choices to a couple well regarded candidates........ out of left field comes John Lynch, who has never been a GM before -- and was seemingly picked by Kyle Shanahan.

who knows -- its crazy enough to work.

McDonough reportedly has some issues and that's why the Niners passed on him

http://www.ninersnation.com/2017/1/28/14423502/49ers-gm-candidates-terry-mcdonough-wary

This is pure hogwash. Here's the truth:

A Cardinals source on Saturday told CSNBayArea.com that general manager Steve Keim has relied heavily on McDonough for his opinions in free agency and the draft over the four years they have worked together in Arizona. The source said McDonough is fearless in his evaluations and helped uncover such small-school prospects as running back David Johnson (2015, third round, Northern Iowa), wide receiver John Brown (2014, third round, Pittsburg State) and defensive lineman Rodney Gunter (2015, fourth round, Delaware State).McDonough has not been involved in contract negotiations, which has been Marathe’s responsibility for most of his 16 years with the organization. During the season, McDonough typically hits the road Tuesday through Thursday to evaluate the nation’s top college prospects."That’s his No. 1 asset," the source said.

If the 49ers suspected serious character flaws or that the Cardinals were privately wanting to get rid of him, there is no way they would have asked him back for a 2nd interview.

Mitch, it's not pure hogwash. The ninersnation story coincides with much of what I have heard in the past. In fact, I call the CSNBay area article more of a fabrication. There is no uncovering small-school prospects these days. Regardless of the school, or size of the school, if a guy can play, the scouting world knows about him. The scouting food chain starts with local scouts to regional scouts to national scouts, and then goes to executive levels or something similar to that setup.

For example, a woman I work with has a son who plays for Urbana college, a miniscule who knows what division school in Ohio. I overheard her talking on the phone about Jacksonville and some other schools looking at him not so much as a draft prospect but a camp player. I asked my friend since he works for Jax and he knew of the kid. Point is nobody is "uncovering" any prospects. Now, McDonough may have liked the players more but that's likely about it.

Besides, wasn't Brentson Buckner credited with personally scouting Gunter and raved about him after a private workout?

The hogwash is the Niners Nation reporter speculating that the Cardinals don't like McDonough and want to get rid of him. Steve Keim has even said about the "fiery" McDonough that he likes that McDonough is so passionate and opinionated and that he makes for great discussions and arguments about which players are the best fits.

Surely McDonough isn't the only draft personnel director to uncover small school gems---but, there is no denying that McDonough is a key figure and voice in the Cardinals' draft selections.

If you go back and watch All or Nothing, Terry McDonough's involvement in the draft was profound. First it was he who was on the phone with Ameer Abdullah when the Lions snatched him one pick in front to the Cardinals.

Then when BA and SK were discussing RB options in the 3rd round, it was McDonough who relayed the scouting report on David Johnson and with it, his supreme confidence in making the pick.

As for Rodney Gunter, Gunter was first discovered by Cardinals' area scout Zac Canty----who gave Gunter a draftable grade.

McDonough---who reviews tape on every player the Cardinals give a draftable grade to---raved about what he saw on Gunter's tapes, to the point of asking the defensive line coach, Brentson Bruckner to go give Gunter a workout.

It was McDonough (buoyed by Canty's and Bruckner's reviews) who urged the Cardinals to trade up for Gunter in the 4th round. They received a tip that the 49ers (ironically) were going to take Gunter at pick #117, thus the Cardinals made the trade with Cleveland to acquire the #116 pick.

If the Cardinals didn't like Terry McDonough they would have never promoted him to VP of Player Personnel and given him such a vital role in the draft.
