Another name is on the radar for the Houston Texans.
According to KPRC2 Sports' Aaron Wilson, Texas A&M defensive end Nic Scourton will meet with the Texans this weekend as one of their top 30 visits. The projected top 50 pick previously visited the Arizona Cardinals ahead of next month's draft.
Earlier this weekend, Scourton, along with several other A&M prospects, worked out during drills at the Aggies' Pro Day excelled during positional drills at the Aggies’ campus Pro Day workout attended by Texans general manager Nick Caserio and coach DeMeco Ryans. Scourton impressed during the on-field drills and should be linked to the end of Day 1 buzz after his breakout season in College Station.
While only playing one season for the Aggies, his impact was felt. Following his 10-sack season with Purdue, he transferred near his hometown of Bryan to join forces with first-year head coach Mike Elko. In 12 games, Scourton ranked third in the SEC with 14 tackles for loss and led Texas A&M with five sacks.
Scourton downplayed the importance of running a strong 40-time and worked more so on his technique during position group drills, where his footwork, explosiveness and power were all on display.
“I think a lot of people focus on the wrong things,” Scourton told reporters following drills on Thursday. “Focusing on (expletive) 40-yard dashes for D-linemen, I just don’t think that’s important. I think what’s important is the tape and going out there and competing and working out for coaches that you might play for.”
The Texans might not need a defensive end in Round 1 after inking All-Pro Danielle Hunter to a new one-year extension this offseason, but multiple teams will use three defensive ends to pressure quarterbacks into throwing under duress. With the 25th overall pick, Houston is at the mercy of teams ahead regarding addressing its offensive line woes.
If the Texans walked away impressed, he at least should be in the conversation as a Day 2 option should they trade out of the first round. The first-team All-SEC defensive end said he about 20-25 pounds from where he was during the season.
When running drills, he looked the part of a difference-maker off the edge.
“That’s what I do,” Scourton said. “Those are drills that translate to the football field. I’m a competitor, and I think me, Shemar Turner, Rodas (Johnson), all those other guys, we went out there and competed.”
The Texans own seven draft picks, including four in the top 100.
