it is odd they go IR vs just releasing him.

as a vet, his annual salary is guaranteed --

on IR, he is stuck with AZ and cant be brought back (not enough weeks to designate for return)

cut -- free to sign with another team, and who knows -- maybe some team going to the playoffs loses their kicker and wants a vet like Dawson

I read in the book next man up that they are paid 66% of their salary (I think). If that is true then the left over could roll over to next years cap which would be about a million, I think he is paid 3 mil per. That might pay for Gonzo and still roll some over if that is still the rule.

The folly of drafting kickers back then was college kickers used a tee. Very few were as good in the NFL as they were in college. Tony Franklin was one example. John Lee was very much the product of kicking off of a tee and we wasted a 2nd round pick on him.

The book was written after the 2004 season and that was the first I had ever heard of it. Great book though, I am not much for reading, but I couldn't put it down. I would sit out on the deck with a cigar and that book, while recovering from back surgery this past summer.
