This draft is "that guy in your fantasy football league".

That guy who takes sleepers a round early. That guy who wants to be smarter than you. That guy worries about positional scarcity. That guy never plays it safe.

Steve Keim is that guy in the NFL. That guy is either a genius and a champion or the definition of a legend in his own mind.

That guy pisses pretty much everyone off. He is too crazy for the safe guy, is too radical for the boring guy, but doesn't go far enough for the gambling guy.

I admire that guy...even though he pisses me off.

I don't really know what to think about this draft so far. I love some and not others. But hey it isn't my ass on the line and that guy says "my ass is on the fire but turn it up".

Steve Keim is that guy and he doesn't care who he makes mad.

Mike Martz tried to be 'that guy' in the midst of the Rams 'Greatest Show on Turf' run. Their draft selections eventually lead to the demise of the program from which the Rams still have not recovered. Sometimes it is better to be safe rather than trying to show how much smarter you are than everyone else.

Cards are making some 'interesting moves' with their selections and hope they are making informed choices . . . and not trying to show how clever they are in their selections.

I know we lost Leicht or how ever you spell it, and need was a bigger part of this Draft compared to last if you know what I'm saying. Our picks haven't really been BPA style at all, more like well defined picks that suit our .... wait for it...nah, it would be lame to say it now.

Needs, they have been not only addressed, but they have postage on them that suggest we had a bunch of picks in mind, and we straight up wanted those individuals, or should I say captains? This was more like a tactical assault on the Draft with our scouts and Keim time making moves that left the Draft place silent.

It will be fun to look at Leights Bucs Draft a few years from now.

So I'm kinda feeling you on this one Sanders, but if we kept the scouts that panned out our other finds, we might be pleasantly surprised with these desired positions being addressed.

I agree with your assessment. It feels like this year's draft has gone fairly predictably compared to years past. Certainly no obvious picks like Alex Okafor and Andre Ellington falling like a rock.

I enjoyed the Keim article where he talked about seeing free agency 3 years out. I think that may play a little into the strategy of drafting Martin and John Brown with Fitz and Dockett's contracts uncertain after this year.

Has Keim adjusted his Draft style because he believes we are that close? Could he have given out assignments on desired positions instead of full on BPA? Inquiring minds want to know! ;)

No I think he is honest when he says this is his BPA. If he wasn't a true believer in his stuff, then he wouldn't be that guy

I know this is going to sound hippie, but in the hippie world the head hippie sits at the the front of the table all by their lonesome. In the War room pic I saw, Keim held that position but BA had his chair in that slight diagnal position that wasn't on the "rest of the family" side.

Stuff like that talks to me, I never care where I sit (I'm just loud like that) but I do enjoy watching such interactions. Arians and Keim are both feeling the success of their first years. The Draft seemed to go to what Arians said he needed...and I hate the phrase but...just sayin.

I can't believe this. The Cards get rid of Rod Graves, a move that was lauded by most fans and pundits. They get a real GM in Keim, a move that was praised by fans and NFL pundits. They hire Arians. Together the two guys tear apart pretty much the entire roster except the core and flip the team into a 10-6 success in the hardest division in football. They have a good start to their second off season and now all of a sudden three picks into the 2014 draft people are jumping all over these guys because of three picks that nobody has seen play one snap in the NFL. The biggest gripe? The players selected were team captains. Big freaking whoop. This is the best the Cardinals have looked for as long as I followed them. They have a plan and future in place. The draft was very active and it's hard to go after what the Cards need when picking in the second half of each round. I guess what I'm trying to say is it could be a lot worse. We have seen a lot worse and all these posts ripping into Keim and Arians when clearly the team has turned the corner after three picks is outright insanity and ridiculous.

– The Cardinals don’t want to draft for need. Then the first three picks go to a safety, a tight end and a pass rusher and that certainly felt like need.

“That’s the emphasis you put into building that (120) board,” GM Steve Keim said. “We say best player available, but there is an emphasis on who impacts our football team the most. We are never going to leave a good player to the side, but we will take who impacts us the most.”

You'll have to forgive the long-term Card fans who have been through the washing machine cycle too many times. Each new mgmt. team brings renewed hope followed by disappointment. It's a defense mechanism to not get too excited or optimistic so as to not get battered yet again when things fall apart. I'm not into ripping Graves/Whiz as much as others on the forum---our core is still players drafted under that regime. They also took us to our one and only SB trip even while we were the worst team to ever make it there. They just weren't able to solve the QB position after Warner. Whiz would still be here if they had a QB perform like Palmer did instead of all the desperate attempts to fill the position that just didn't work.

The jury is still out as to whether the team has turned any type of corner with BASK. They earn that desingation when the team core are players they brought in/drafted. I thought the team turned the corner the year we went to the SB and then followed that with another decent season. So just as it is 'ridiculous' to be overly critical of BASK this early in their tenure, it is 'ridiculous' to announce that we have turned any type of corner on the teams future. We got very lucky with some player performances last year and that luck can just as quickly disappear. That's why some fans are wringing their hands over the draft---we're taking guys based on future potential, a risky business. Cards have a long, long list of failed draft picks who had 'potential.' And to voice concern over that draft tactic is not 'ripping' BASK. It is simply having good recall of Cardinal history.

I've been following this team for 22 years, and have seen a lot of bad times with the Cards, this time is different and if people can't see that so be it, but to blast what Keim and Arians are doing after three draft picks in their second draft is pretty ridiculous no matter how you slice it.

I am a Kiem/Arians supporter, and this shouldn't be taken that I am not.

However, if that's the philosophy, that is NOT "best player available" theory. As soon as you elevate a player based on "who impacts your football team", that's drafting for need. If two players are tied for BPA, only then do you take the need.

This team DID turn the corner, but it wasn't when we went to the Super Bowl. It happened years earlier when Michael Bidwill came on board and the stadium vote passed.

The Cardinals overall have gotten increasingly better in the way they do business since that happened.

We not only have turned the corner but we are a couple miles down the street.

A diehard fan believes that he/she knows more about what is best for the team than all the scouts, coaches, owners, etc. If only the head coach would call a time out, they would glady put down the beer and nachos, tuck in their beer gut, and sprint onto the field to throw the game-winning TD. Of course draft moves are going to be critiqued---some will happen to be what we would do, others are just plain dumb all because we know best. It is too early to state that BASK is different. We didn't make the playoffs last year regardless of what the record was. You state it is too early in the BASK mgmt. to 'rip' their draft picks. When is soon enough?

Case in point. I didn't want the Cards to draft any of the QBs that would be available at #20. My preference was to continue building the team D and get us into the Top 5 and get to the playoffs. Guess I got my wish with a needed SS. Others on the list wanted a QBOTF. What happens if JM or TB or DC become the next Wilson? The choice of SS is going to look pretty lame regardless of how well DB performs---especially if the Cards don't get a QB replacement for Palmer. Every comment about BASK will then be that they passed on a franchise QB to take a SS and then a developmental TE! If that is how you see the draft unfolding, the diehard fan has a responsibility to state it NOW as it unfolds. None of this 'I knew it all along' two years ago that we made the wrong choice in the 2014 draft. And to speak out is not 'ripping' BASK---it is being a dedicated fan that cares about the team now and into the future. Afterall, BASK are both newcomers to the Cards for a lot on this list---they have MY team in their hands and I will offer my opinion. Some have been Card fans longer than SK has been alive. If a Cardinal fan doesn't like the draft (or any other decision) they have to speak out and should not be 'ripped' for doing so.

I was with you for that entire long post (only quoted the last line, but the rest was very much spot on, however the last part there in bold is where you went off.

We should all be open to being ripped for our opinions. They are our opinions, they will diverge from everyone else's who also have been fans for long periods of time, and ripping each other's opinions on what makes a good team short and long term is great. Keep it non-personal, and attack the football opinion all you like...don't troll it, make cases on why QBOF at 20 is better than SS at 20 and vice versa...nothing wrong with that.

It's when it gets personal that it crosses a line, but we should all be ripped for our opinions if we and others feel strongly about them in opposite directions.

We have some really good football minds on this board, but none of us are right all the time and we often wear our own blinders about our opinions.

Any GM, any head coach, any owner is "That Guy". In order to attain those positions, it's imperative that you have a set of beliefs that inform everything about how you do your job. There are 100's of "Those Guys" throughout pro sports, and hundreds of thousands more in the business world. You can't be successful in these positions if you aren't "That Guy".
Keim is no different than any other of "Those Guys".

The Logan Thimas pick proves Chris's point. I think they tried to get way to cute there.
